CAMPI-TMA tally: Local vehicle sales reach almost 30k units in Jan. 2023

MANILA: In the first month of 2023, the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) and the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) came close to reaching 30,000 vehicles sold in the Philippines.

According to their joint report, the two organizations tallied 29,499 units in January 2023. The aforementioned figure represents a 42.1 percent increase over the 20,785 vehicles they sent to consumers during the same month last year.

Compared to the sales in December 2022, when CAMPI-TMA sold 37,259 units, the number of vehicles rolled out to buyers in January 2023 is 20.8 percent lower.

Commercial vehicle (CV) sales, which accounted for 21,993 units sold and 74.56 percent of the market in January 2023, are still driving the market forward. The aforementioned figure represented an increase of 46.8% compared to the 14,981 automobiles sold in January 2023, but a decrease of 23.2% from the 28,645 units sold in the final month of 2022.

When compared to January 2022, when the two groups sold 5,784 units, passenger car (PC) sales for the first month of the year increased by 29.8% to 7,506 units, or a 25.44 percent market share.. When compared to the 8,614 units that consumers purchased in December 2022, the PC segment had a 12.86% decline.

CAMPI President Atty. Rommel Gutierrez said: “The double-digit sales growth of 42.1% recorded in January, coming from a year-on-year robust growth performance in 2022 is a good development momentum for the auto industry as we start the year.”

“The auto industry is optimistic of its continued expansion from the demand-side standpoint driven by the growing domestic consumer market. On the other hand, the supply-side challenges are also an important factor that the industry is mindful of as this may hamper the industry growth”, Gutierrez explained.

Despite the growth, CAMPI President still warned that the “the auto sales sustained growth or exceeded the last year’s record is not always clear-cut as our overall economic health and activity depends on various economic key indicators.”

Toyota Motor Philippines sold 13,428 automobiles in January 2023, accounting for 45.42 percent of all CAMPI-TMA sales. Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation came in second with 5,030 vehicles sold.

Ford Motor Philippines (2,107 cars retailed) and Nissan Philippines Inc (1,878 units) took third and fourth place, respectively, in the previous month. After selling 1,639 units in the first month of the year, Honda Cars Philippines Inc. passed Suzuki Philippines Inc. to claim fifth place.
