Could Suzuki’s kei cars in Brunei also be possible in PH?

Japanese marque set to sell Every and Alto in our ASEAN neighbor

Could Suzuki’s kei cars in Brunei also be possible in PH?

MANILA: Suzuki has announced that it will offer kei, or “mini-vehicles” in Brunei. This was spearheaded by the company’s distributor in Brunei, Boustead Sdn. Bhd

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are kei cars?

Kei cars are small vehicles designed around Japan's kei-jidōsha or “light automobile” category.
  • Which Suzuki kei cars will be sold in Brunei?

Suzuki will offer the Alto hatchback and Every microvan in Brunei.
  • Notably, this is a massive development for the ASEAN market as kei cars have only been distributed in an official capacity in Japan for the longest time. And yes, the ones going to be sold in Brunei aren’t grey-market imports; they're official Suzuki models produced in Pakistan by the Pak Suzuki Motor Company.

Specific kei models to be sold in Brunei are the Alto hatchback and the Every microvan. Per Suzuki, these will have the same dimensions and engines as the ones sold in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM)

The aforementioned is likewise another milestone, this time for Suzuki. That’s because this marks the very first time that the brand has imported models from an overseas production facility that are specced the same way as their JDM counterparts.

Interestingly, kei-jidōsha or "light automobile" nameplates, unlike in Japan, do not enjoy tax breaks such as reduced road tax in Brunei. So once available in the market, they will be treated as regular cars in the said country.

Kei cars, however, do come with inherent advantages regardless of legislation. Due to their small engines, they often enjoy better fuel efficiency compared even to the already small subcompact segment.

Kei-class tires are likewise cheaper due to their smaller size, and kei cars typically use less engine oil. Due to their size, they are also touted by Suzuki as the ideal mobility solution for urban environments.

    Suzuki Alto, Every

As mentioned above, the Suzuki Alto and Every for Brunei will have the same dimensions and engine specs as the one sold in Japan.

For reference, the JDM version of the Suzuki Alto uses a 658-cubic-centimeter (cc), three-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission or a five-speed manual gearbox. At most, it produces 48 horsepower and 58 Newton-meters of torque in the base trim.

Other trims in Japan also get a hybrid powertrain and a four-wheel-drive system. The standard model is also front-wheel drive.

Here are the dimensions of the JDM Suzuki Alto:

    Length (in millimeters)

    3,395

    Width (mm)

    1,475

    Height (mm)

    1,525

    Wheelbase (mm)

    2,460

The Every, meanwhile, uses the same 658-cc engine as the Alto. It has the same power outputs and similar transmission options.

In terms of body size, the Every is slightly taller than the Alto due to its microvan body. Its dimensions are as follows:

    Length (in millimeters)

    3,395

    Width (mm)

    1,475

    Height (mm)

    1,895

    Wheelbase (mm)

    2,430

Kei cars in Brunei: A precedent

With kei cars poised for market release in Brunei, it sets a precedent for these small vehicles to see wider release in ASEAN markets. And yes, we are hoping and wishing that it will happen for the Philippine market as well.

Sure, this can be considered a distant and unlikely possibility, but kei cars, by their very nature, will do swimmingly well in the Philippine driving setting where traffic is tight, and roads are sometimes very restrictive in terms of width.

But what do you think? Would you want kei cars in the Philippine market, or would you rather stick with larger rides?
