Geely Coolray: A collaborative product of 1,000 engineers and designers worldwide

MANILA: Geely reports that its Geely Coolray crossover was the result of the collaboration of a global team of Geely engineers and designers. The Geely Coolray also emerges as a vehicle that symbolizes and reflects the vitality and enthusiasm of its target audience — young people and their families with a global outlook.

The personality of the Coolray evokes vibe and efficiency, yet is stimulating and competent at the same time. It combines high performance with safety. All these aspects are reflected in the architecture of the exterior. The Coolray has its unique character and will not be confused with other members of the Geely family.

The design of the Geely alone has been conceptualized by almost 1,000 engineers and designers worldwide since the auto company has studios in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, California, Sweden, and Shanghai in China.

According to the lead exterior designer for the Coolray, Jamie Barrett, the Geely team aimed for their cars to have various themes based on one significant style.

For instance, the rings of the Coolray are more profound and broader and create a wider mask containing the lights and the grille. Also, the lower bumpers have been formed to allow air to move around the vehicle, and this increases the fuel economy.

Barrett also explained that the front part of the Coolray has been designed to have bold volumes that release a substantial three-dimensional (3D) effect. The hood contains a durable power bulge that tightens towards the front, emphasizing on the Geely logo. The curves and surfaces appear to be premium and vibrant, providing a quality feel.

Meanwhile, the satin chrome wing leads one to the strong front haunches of the vehicle, extending into the side profile before moving up into the D-pillar. Enhancing the sporting credentials of the Coolray are the carbon fiber components on the rear and front bumpers, along with the rims, which provide the vehicle with its thrilling road presence and sporty stance.

The speeding hood and low-slung silhouette have been established to provide the Coolray its presence. The world of aviation serves as the main inspiration for most of the elements of its design. The point at which the roof shoots down at the rear seems to be suspended above the D-pillar.

Jamie also points out that the inspiration for the design of the Coolray is that of aircraft wing stabilizers, to induce accurate cutting through the air and generate a floating sensation. The jet thruster-like twin exhausts and aero-inspired spoiler establish on this theme and aid in providing the Coolray its sporty and playful appeal.

The interior designer of Coolray, Mei Song, also explained that on the inside, the aviation theme extends right down to the two side air vents, which are also inspired by jet engines. The layout of the driving area embraces the design style of the cockpit that is articulated more dynamically and lightly, allowing the driver to have absolute driving pleasure.

The first thing that people will see is the 10.25-inch floating control panel, which lends a vibrant appeal to the interior. Nevertheless, countless design nuances add up to the interior experience of the vehicle.

Mei song also stated that the cabin space was constructed using a seamless layered architecture. For instance, the horizontal theme goes beyond the instrument panel towards the door panel, allowing the visual appeal to look broader.

The visual details and cues contribute to the general aesthetics of the Coolray. During the day, attractive dashboard panels show an orbiting planet-inspired pattern. During the night, it changes to an echoing pattern, which includes similarity to the expanding front Cosmos Grille.

Another contributing element to the sporting vibe is the red dashboard and accents on the door inserts and seats. Nevertheless, this is not just any old red since the shade and its effect on the driver have been well-thought.

According to Mei Song, the red color utilized in the interior is adjusted with the appropriate levels of hue and saturation, similar to the color of vintage red wine. This provides a generally refreshing and trendy look and feel as it prevents the common visual fatigue due to bright red that can also impact driving safety.
