GWM developing Super Off-Road Grade model

BEIJING: Great Wall Motors (GWM) is developing a new electrified powertrain that will offer super off-road capability.

GWM Powertrain Senior Development Director Le Neindre Yvan said that the product — which will sit on top of all the brand’s off-road capable options—shall be seen on vehicles with military applications.

No timeline for the technology’s completion was shared at the time of posting.

Existing electrified 4x4 configurations

The Chinese automaker’s existing electrified off-road systems are classified into three categories: Gen2 Urban (Hi4), General off-road (Hi4-Z), and Strong Offroad (Hi4-T).

Sitting on top grouping is the GWM Hi4-T system. Made up of a parallel off-road hybrid system, this configuration features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and electric motors (paired with a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission), a mechanical four-wheel-drive, as well as differential locks with transfer case lock. Its pulling power is up to 24,000 Newton meters (Nm).

The GWM models that fitted with this kind of tech include:

• Tank 700 Hi4-T
• P500 (also known as Cannon Alpha)
• Tank 300

Seen as the GWM’s middle-grade powertrain technology, GWM’s Hi4-Z technology can be seen at the Tank 500 nameplate. This version can do:

Maximum output (in horsepower [hp>)	958.8
Peak torque (in Newton-meters [Nm>)	1,375 Nm
Acceleration (0-100 kilometers per hour in seconds)	4.6 (5.5 at low state of charge)
Electric vehicle range (in kilometers [km>)	200

Lastly, the GWM Hi4 boasts 50:50 weight distribution and intelligent torque vectoring control to make vehicles more stable, and controllable.

Scalable across GWM’s medium to large vehicles, this technology has a 1.5 engine with a pair of electric motors, and a proprietary 19.09-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.

This package, which has the same range as the Hi4-Z, has the capacity to give churns of up to:

The following models are equipped with Hi4:

• Haval H6
• B26 (also known as the Haval H7)
• B07  

New diesel tech

Aside from the continuous studies about the Super Off-Road technology, the company already developed a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The new mill offers more efficient towing capacity (3,500 kilograms) while giving out better acceleration (20 percent) and lower fuel consumption (five percent).

This newly unveiled mill can also dish out the following numbers:

Maximum output (in horsepower)	227.9
Peak torque (in Newton-meters)	620

Available GWM PH powertrain configurations

In the Philippines, GWM off-road-ready roster is made up of the Haval H9, Cannon Pilot, and Cannon — all of which are powered by diesel-fed engines.

The GWM Tank 700 (revealed at the recently concluded Manila International Auto Show 2026) is fitted with a Hi4-Z engine while the incoming Haval H7 (to be released in the country within the year) will come with Hi-4T system.
