Honda Sets Guinness World Record for Fuel Efficiency
MANILA: The day you create records is the day when something incredible happens for the first time and at the same time it is the day which makes history for the rest of the times. Yes, the same happened when the Honda Civic Tourer i-DTEC, diesel engine traveled 13,497 km to set new record of 35.5 km/l. The Civic now holds title of the “Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries”
Not long back, it was on June 1, 2015 only when Honda announced their aim of getting the honor of Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency and now the Honda Civic Tourer i-DTEC was used that was equipped with 1.6-litre engine and was driven by two members of Honda's European Research and Development team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren.
The team started off in Belgium and then took a clockwise route across Europe. For setting the record, the Civic Tourer ran an average of 1500 km on a single tank. The rules which need to be followed to set this record is that there should be the same two drivers who will complete the whole journey and drive approximately 600 km each day, which means driving for 7.5 hours each day. Further, the car should be a standard model in every respect, there should not be any modification to create an added advantage. For each fuel stop, the car is given a full tank to ensure no weight advantage. The tires will be inflated with recommended pressure and wheel alignment is set according to factory specifications so they represent the real driving conditions. Moreover, the independent adjudicators are there to keep an eye from start to end.
Civic Tourer i-DTEC's official fuel economy stands at 26.3 km/l and now it is increased by 26%, i.e. it stands at 35.5 km/l. “It was tough, but we really enjoyed it, and setting this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title has made all of the hard work worthwhile. This was a huge team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved for all of their commitment and support. After spending so much time behind the wheel Julian and I are just happy to be back behind our desks for a while!” said Fergal McGrath, one of the drivers for the record run.
"This is an incredible achievement and the team should all be very proud of the efforts that they have put in to set this new Guinness World Record. Driving the equivalent distance from their home in the UK to Australia in just 25 days is a huge challenge very few would take on. The fuel economy figures are remarkable – particularly when you consider that this is not a small car, but an estate with class-leading load space and vast practicality.” said Leon Brannan, Head of Cars for Honda (UK).
