Hyundai Autonomous IONIQ Concept revealed at LA Auto Show 2016
MANILA: The LA Auto Show 2016 witnessed a series of new concepts and launches but, there were only few which received enormous attentions from the visitors. One such showcase was the Autonomous IONIQ concept introduced by Hyundai Motor. Sharing the designing cues with rest of the IONIQ lineup, the particular Autonomous IONIQ concept is among those few cars which use a hidden LiDAR system in the front bumper rather than on the roof.
The aim of autonomous IONIQ concept is to make the self-driving system less complex and more efficient and thus the manufacturer has used Smart Cruise Control’s forward-facing radar and Lane Keeping Assist cameras. Both of these are further integrated with the LiDAR technology. The South-Korean automaker is also working on to develop its own autonomous vehicle operating system, which will use a lot less computing power, resulting in a low-cost platform. This will further help Hyundai in producing cars of the future that are much more affordable for the general public.
The other highlights of the autonomous IONIQ are as follows: -
- Capable of detecting the relative location and speed of the objects in the vehicle’s path to plan the route ahead
- Equipped with three-camera array, which helps in detecting the pedestrian proximity, lane markings and traffic signals
- GPS antenna to determine the location of each vehicle
- Location accuracy, road grade/curvature, lane width and indication data from Hyundai MnSoft
- A Blind Spot Detection radar to ensure simple lane departures changes are executed safely
The automaker has also communicated that it will be presenting two autonomous IONIQs at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2017. The car will be seen crossing the neon-and sunlit boulevards of Las Vegas. Apart from media rides, the upcoming IONIQs will be also prepared to tackle the high levels of pedestrian traffic, stop lights, stop signs, school zones, road construction, road blocks, speed bumps, dogs without a leash, children at play, shopping centers and intersections without traffic signals.
Not only this, Hyundai’s Project IONIQ lab is also working on analyzing the future trends in the automobile industry and will soon come up with more such innovative concepts to take the lead in the global market.
