MANILA: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 a Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) rating. The significant feat gives Hyundai nine 2022 TSP+ and Top Safety Pick (TSP)-rated models. Together, Hyundai and Genesis have 14 TSP/TSP+ models.
In a statement, Hyundai Motor North America Chief Safety Officer Brian Latouf said, “As the industry navigates to an all-electric future, we are extremely proud to have been awarded an IIHS TSP+ for our all-new Ioniq 5, the first of three Hyundai EV’s to be built on our Electric-Global Modular Platform. Safety is foundational at Hyundai and earning the IIHS TSP+ award demonstrates our ‘Safety First’ commitment to our customers.”
The Ioniq 5 comes with the latest version of Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems that guarantee the highest standards of road safety and convenience. It is the first Hyundai model to be equipped with Highway Driving Assist 2. Other available driving assistance systems include Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and High Beam Assist.
Other Hyundai models that received a TSP+ rating are Palisade, Nexo, Santa Fe, and Tucson. Meanwhile, Elantra, Sonata, Santa Cruz, and Venue received a TSP rating.
The TSP and TSP+ awards require for “Good” ratings in all of the six IIHS crashworthiness tests: driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Awarded models must also have front crash prevention technology that received ratings of “Superior” or “Advanced” in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian assessments. Winners of TSP must also have “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights. The “Plus” designation is awarded to models with “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights across all trim levels and packages.
