Other EV industry updates
At the same press conference, EVAP and member brands also shared some updates for the local EV industry.
For starters, EVAP President Edmund Araga shared that the organization is currently working with an international organization on how to implement “carbon credits” in the local scene.
Araga likewise said that they are also in talks with TESDA and other education-focused groups to address the long-term needs of EV owners. Specifically, the organization is looking to create an “EV curriculum” to foster future EV engineers and technicians.
“The tech is new, so we have to know what to do when they eventually break down,” Araga said.
For his part, the Department of Energy-Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino professed the government agency's support for the use of renewable energy for EV charging points. Doing so will assuage any fears of the effects of mass EV adoption on the power grid.
“By 2040, 100 percent of EV charging stations will be powered by renewable energy,” Aquino said.
The aforementioned goal is supported by the EVIDA law and its Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI).
BYD Cars Philippines Managing Director Bob Palanca also disclosed the continuous growth of the company’s dealership network. To note, the brand’s outlets are a crucial part of the country’s EV charging network since they are also equipped with charging points.
By the end of 2025, BYD Cars Philippines aims to have a total of 77 outlets nationwide. Currently, the company has 40 already opened.
“Our objective is for EVs to be able to drive from Pagudpud to Mindanao,” Palanca said.
