Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion, an attempt to make space wagons cool again
MANILA: Volkswagen is going to debut a new addition to its ID electric vehicles and its unlikely choice of venue—this year’s Los Angeles motor show.
The company has already released an artistic rendition of its new electric car concept, the ID. Space Vizzion. The 7th model is an estate variant of the ID Vizzion car that was unveiled in early 2018 and will be based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform. Volkswagen describes the new ID. SPACE VIZZION car concept as “a wagon of tomorrow that combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV. Stylistically, the ID. SPACE VIZZION follows the design DNA of the ID. family, yet it has a completely independent and progressive character.”
According to the company’s press release, the ID. Space Vizzion is capable of a 590km electric range under the more rigid WLTP measures. To compare, the top-spec ID.3 with its 77kWh battery has 550km of range. Klaus Bischoff, head of Volkswagen Design, says that the new ID Vizzion car “fully exploits the technical possibilities of e-mobility and guarantees long ranges, dynamic driving performance and a whole new level of digital networking.”
Inside, the car will remind you of the Tesla Model 3 interior—with its entirely digitized cockpit and leather seats. The upholstery materials are a bit unique. Accordingly, it is made from “sustainable raw materials, such as the new AppleSkin™, artificial leather with a proportion of residual matter from apple juice production.”
The ID. Space Vizzion that will be unveiled in Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on November 19 is the production model that will come in different versions and is set to release in the North American, Chinese, and European markets come 2021.
With its modern look, sustainable materials, and green energy, the question now is, will the new Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion have the power to change people’s perception about station wagons? Especially since the company will launch its latest model in a territory that finds station wagons ‘uncool.’
