BYD Tang EV vs DM-i: what are the differences

BYD Cars Philippines, under the stewardship of the Ayala-owned ACMobility, has launched the Tang DM-i not too long ago. Packing the brand’s Dual Mode-intelligent (DM-i) hybrid powertrain technology, the seven-seater sport utility vehicle (SUV) offers would-be owners a slightly sustainable means of moving without the anxiety that comes with fully electric models.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the BYD Tang EV?

The BYD Tang EV uses dual electric motors at the front and rear wheel axles.
  • What powertrain does the BYD Tang DM-i have?

The BYD Tang DM-i has a single electric motor with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine acting as its range extender.
  • But how does it stack up against its all-electric counterpart?

Today, we pit together the BYD Tang EV and the Tang DM-i to help car buyers make a better decision when switching to a more eco-friendly option. To do so, we will be spotting their differences.

    Exterior

Outside, the BYD Tang EV looks sleeker than the Tang DM-i. The former has plenty of curved lines and clean panels, while the latter boasts more aggressive and angular bodylines. It is also worth noting that the Tang EV rides on 21-inch alloy wheels with 265/45 tires while the Tang DM-i uses a set of 20-inch wheels with 255/50 rubber.

Aside from some cosmetic styling differences, they do share many similarities, like LED illumination, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a power tailgate, and windshield wipers (front and back).

    Interior

Some distinction between the BYD Tang EV and the Tang DM-i can still be seen (and felt) when it comes to their cabin.

For instance, the all-electric model uses Nappa leather for its interior upholstery, whereas the hybrid SUV appears to have a less premium material. Further, suede complements the leather cabin trims for the BYD Tang EV, while the Tange DM-i uses a combination of black and gray leather to cover some surfaces of its cockpit.

Also, the BYD Tang EV uses LED technology for its 12.3-inch instrument cluster, while the Tang DM-i employs LCD technology for the instrument panel — also of a similar size.

Lastly, the BYD Tang EV uses a tri-climate air conditioning system with a heat pump while the Tang DM-i is equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control system.
