Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT: would you consider it?

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) has added a new, cheaper automatic transmission-equipped variant of its Triton one-ton pickup truck — essentially making the popular model more attainable to many car buyers. 

With its somewhat cheaper sticker price, drivers whose motoring needs make using a diesel truck necessary — especially with today’s surging petroleum prices — might actually make daily journeys more bearable. 

On that note, here are three reasons why you should consider buying the Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT over other diesel-powered pickups.

Uncompromising power, ease of driving 

The Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT uses the same diesel mill as other variants, with the exception of the range-topping Athlete 4WD AT trim. 

With that said, would-be owners can expect the same level of performance and power as any other grade from the Mitsubishi Triton family, all while reaping the benefits of a reduced price tag. 

Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission — a setup built to handle both work and play. It produces approximately 180 horsepower and 430 Newton-meters of torque. 

On top of enjoying uncompromised power, drivers bringing home the Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT will experience ease of driving with its automatic transmission. 

This makes the Mitsubishi Triton a good pick for those who will drive the truck both on urban roads and on rural thoroughfares, making it a good lifestyle pickup.

Familiar appeal 

While most manufacturers make cheaper variants of their vehicles look like watered-down versions of the nameplates, the Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT retains much of the iconic, bold styling of the truck. 

This is not to say that no exterior appointments were omitted. In fact, the pickup — according to the company’s literature — lacks front fog lamps, daytime running lights, a bedliner, sports or styling bars, and roof rails. It even misses a tailgate-assist system, which is something that buyers should be aware of. 

However, it does not mute the appeal of the model and retains important trims like the large boxy grille, beefy front bumper, claddings on the wheel arches, and a set of 16-inch silver alloy wheels shod in 265/70 series tires. 

That said, the Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT is a good choice for buyers who find that how their pickup truck looks is as important to them as how well it drives. 

Cozy interior 

The cabin of the Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT, despite being the lowest-priced automatic pickup in the stable, is still cozy enough for daily drives. 

While most cheap pickup trucks appear like they have been assembled for commercial use, the model still retains some features that make it more than livable. 

As an example, the instrument cluster — while sporting a urethane steering wheel at the front — still has a 3.5-inch digital display. The center screen is eight-inches big and has wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, seamlessly integrating smartphone use in one’s daily drives. 

Other notable amenities come in the form of a manual air conditioning system, a backup camera, remote keyless entry, and a slew of standard safety features like active stability and traction control, hill-start assist, and trailer stability assist.

The Mitsubishi Triton GX 2WD AT costs just P1.43 million.
