The Mitsubishi Xpander is a seven-seater compact MPV designed by Mitsubishi Motors that was first introduced in 2016 during the Indonesia International Auto show as the XM Concept. The following year, it was unveiled during 25th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. A couple of months later, it officially went on sale and exported on various ASEAN countries as the Xpander. Because of the successful reception of the MPV, Mitsubishi subsequently added a new model, the Xpander Cross. The Xpander Cross is the crossover SUV-inspired, top-of-the-line variant of the Xpander series that was introduced last November 2019. Other models available locally on this MPV series include the Xpander GLS, Xpander GLX Plus, and the Xpander GLX.
The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is a seven-seat MPV more famously known as the ‘baby’ Montero Sport. This top variant Xpander is marketed as a family-friendly vehicle built with a robust exterior and rugged look that is more associated with mid-size SUV rather than an MPV. An aggressive matte black front grille and bumper design make the Xpander Cross looks more muscular. On either side of the grille are new LED headlamps with daytime running lights and fog round found lamps at the lower bumper. On the sides are aerodynamic creases, fender arches, and lower black matted body cladding that wraps around the vehicle adds a two-tone effect. At the rear are garnish and LED combination tail lamps. For the finale, a massive rear spoiler with stop lamp, roof rail, and shark fin antenna completes the athletic, modern look. The Xpander Cross measures 4,500 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,750 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,775 and a ground clearance of 220mm—that’s 20mm higher than the other Xpander model. It rides on a set of 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels wrapped in 205/55 R17 tires. This Mitsubishi MPV is available in six color options: Sunrise Orange, Quartz White Pearl, Red Metallic, Jet Black Mica, Sterling Silver Metallic, and Graphite Gray.
The top variant Mitsubishi MPV offers stability and performance on both paved and rough roads. Its higher ground clearance, compared to other Xpander models, offers a commanding view of the road and an added advantage when traversing flooded urban roads or crossing brooks when off-roading. Steering is soft and reacts accurately even on sharp curves and turns. Gear shifting is uninterrupted, thanks to an automatic transmission, where the engine can react immediately. The MIVEC engine is quite enough with minimal vibrations and though fuel-efficient, does not compromise on performance. In terms of riding comfort, the cabin is comfortable with enough sophistication. The suspension is handled by a combination of MacPherson Strut with coil spring and stabilizer at the front and torsion beam at the rear for a cushioned ride with ample legroom and headroom for the first and second-row seats. The third-row comfort is a different story as is the case on all compact MPV. The seats are firmer and the legroom is cramped and uncomfortable. Cargo space is flexible and roomier compared to the rest of the Xpander line. Moreover, the small details like the backseat pockets, front under-seat drawer for shoes, bottle holders, and ports for charging are family-friendly features that adults traveling with small kids will appreciate, especially on long rides.
The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is fitted with a 4A91 1.5-litre inline 4 DOHC 16-valve with a MIVEC engine that delivers 103 hp of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 141 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 1,499 cc engine uses an electronically controlled injection – multi-point injection (ECI – MULTI) fuel system and has a 45-litre fuel tank capacity. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Xpander has a driving range of 21 to 24 kmpl. In comparison, other local MPVs registered 17 to 20 kmpl.
The Xpander Cross being marketed as a versatile family vehicle, is equipped with global standard safety features. Safety for this Japanese MPV begins with its cabin engineering. The reinforced impact safety evolution (RISE) body, in case of a collision, minimizes cabin deformation while at the same time dispersing force away from the cabin to protect the passengers. Other safety, driver assist and convenience features include engine push start system, cruise control, driver and front passenger SRS airbags, active stability control, traction control, hill start assist, anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, and ISOFIX. For braking power, the Xpander Cross gets a 15-inch ventilated discs at the front and 9-inch leading and trailing drums at the rear aided by a 10-inch master vacuum brake booster.
The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross crossover MPV is a great option for a small family vehicle that has power, performance, and looks to boot. It is versatile enough for both the daily commute and long drives with the family. The cargo space and seating capacity offer plenty of space. The ample amount of ruggedness makes it stand out from the rest of the competition. However, the reliability and integrity of the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross somehow took a hit because of past issues with fuel pumps on previous Xpander models. But Mitsubishi Motors Philippines have already effectively addressed this issue. Otherwise, the Xpander Cross is a good contender to the top-selling Honda BRV. What is more, after-sales service for Mitsubishi is not an issue as there are dealerships across the country for maintenance, repairs, and parts.
Mitsubishi Xpander-Cross is currently concurrent with huge sales because of its spacious seven-sit interior. It is very fun to drive as it does not feel sloppy while changing directions. Its exclusive interior space makes every ride a comforting experience. Its features like infotainment system and the display of rear parking camera increase its suitability. It also stands out in terms
My father recently got the Mitsubishi Xpander-cross and after driving it once or twice I am a fan of the car myself. I have never seen a car with this much high clearance with such neat handling. The Japanese brand has made sure it is easy to take sharp bends and corners with the new suspension setup. The car also
Cars with a higher ground clearance usually handle less neatly while turning corners. This is more common with MPVs that have a SUV style ground clearance. But the Xpander Cross doesn’t suffer from this problem. Mitsubishi has changed the suspension setup and this has done a world of good for the car’s handling. The Xpander Cross has good space. But
I loved handling this car and the perfect lightweight steering wheel offers an amazing riding experience. The engine quality is highly decent and this is another reason behind its outstanding performance on road. The car is just perfect to ride on both city roads as well as highways which is indeed the best option with this car. The fuel economy
You will enjoy handling this car. This I can vouch on. The car has perfect weighted steering wheels. Whether you ride this on urban roads or on highways this is one of the best options. The engine quality is quite decent and provides peppy driving experience. The car has the capacity to score high with its outstanding fuel economy. The
I was searching for a smart-looking SUV that provides a strong driving dynamic. When it comes to moving mechanics, the name of Mitsubishi is certainly used. So I went to Xpander Cross, and that was the best decision. It met all my criteria seamlessly. It comes filled with tech and supportive seats that can be electronically modified. I am amazed
What demotivated me initially to purchase Mitsubishi xpander-cross is its rocket high price range. I found it too expensive and somewhere felt maybe my decision will be very much incorrect if I opt for this car, But then one of my friends, who is already driving this car for years now, convinced me to purchase this car, He said the
This car exudes luxury that can thrill anyone and provide an adrenaline rush the moment you step inside your car. The mini sized SUV car carries a touch of elegance that is practically unmissable. But then, price wise also the car is quite a high end one. The engine and gearbox are not of standard quality. That is pretty disappointing
