2021 Mitsubishi Outlander confirms sharing platform with Renault-Nissan

MANILA: Trevor Mann, the Mitsubishi Motors Chief Operations Officer, recently confirmed that the upcoming 2021 Outlander model will be built atop the Nissan-Renault platform. The platform will probably be shared with the next-gen Nissan X-Trail & presumably the Renault Koleos. He confirmed the news during a press conference at the global debut of the new Mitsubishi Triton/Strada in Bangkok.

The kind of platform an automobile rides on always instils interest in the car admirers as it gives a fair idea regarding what to expect from it, from the dimensional viewpoint. The similar underpinnings of the Renault/Nissan indicate to the fact that the Outlander will read more lengthwise and breadthwise compared to other Mitsubishi crossover offerings in the range. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander will feature a distinct design and look in the lineup.

The confirmation of this is quite interesting as it is happening just after Nissan had taken over 34% stake in the Japanese multinational auto-company, Mitsubishi. Trevor Mann used to work as an executive at Nissan formerly and now is the Chief Operations Officer at Mitsubishi, following the acquisition of the shares in the company. Similarly, Mr Guillaume Cartier is a Nissan appointee as well and serve Mitsubishi now as its Senior VP of Global Marketing & Sales.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is in its early stage and the Outlander is believed to be the very first Mitsubishi vehicle that will benefit from the fruit of this advantageous alliance. The new Outlander and other cars benefitting from this successful alliance will not lose their own distinctive identity. Regarding the plan of shared platform usage among the “tri-alliance” members, Mr Guillaume said that the planned offerings are like a restaurant buffet where multiple items are served but every company is free to select items according to their needs and preferences. Trevor Mann also confirmed at the premiere that this new Mitsubishi Outlander is arriving in 2021.
