2027 Porsche Taycan features simulated gear shifts

MANILA: Porsche has provided the Taycan high-performance electric vehicle (EV) for model year 2027 with the ability to simulate gear shifts. This goes together with a system that can imitate the rumble and aggressive tone of a combustion engine. 

The new virtual gearbox for the Porsche Taycan is known as the E-Shift system, and it is touted to provide “an authentic, dynamic gear shift sensation” that approximates the physical gearbox "feel" of a gasoline-powered Porsche. 

Specifically, the system includes eight simulated gears that replicate gear-shift jerks and gear-specific drag torque. It even has a simulated rev-limiter and a virtual tachometer. This feature was integrated into the vehicle’s paddle shifters, which are paired with a GT-sports steering wheel that comes standard on the Taycan Turbo GT trim.

Notably, the E-Shift system goes together with the “Porsche Electric Sport Sound,” an adaptive sound-generation system for both the interior and exterior of the Taycan. For accuracy, the sound's tone and intensity depend on the car’s electronic motor load, the currently selected virtual gear, and the virtual tachometer. 

These two new features for the Porsche Taycan are said to enhance a driver’s connection with the car. Sure, these can be labeled as “fake,” but the German marque said that these multi-sensory enhancements may be enough to approximate the “authentic feedback” one can get from a combustion-powered sports car. 

2027 Porsche Taycan: other upcoming improvements

Apart from the E-Shift and the Porsche Electric Sport Sound systems, the 2027 Taycan also received, for the first time ever, an optional Manthey kit that can be ordered directly from the factory. As the German sports car maker shared, the new Taycan Manthey Kit enhances the EV’s aerodynamics. 

Likewise added for the 2027 model is a new set of summer tires. The brand didn’t say which manufacturer these were sourced from, but they can improve the Taycan’s (with Performance Battery Plus) range, allowing it to cover up to 700 kilometers on a single full charge. 

In addition, the model year update of the Porsche Taycan was geared up with a new infotainment system with configurable widgets, improved voice control with artificial intelligence (AI) support, a more precise navigation system, and the capability to accept over-the-air updates. 

As of this publishing, it was not indicated whether the updated Porsche Taycan is already available from the brand’s local arm. On the one hand, the Porsche global newsroom did say that it “is now available to order from all Porsche centers.”
