2nd-gen model gets new look, powertrain

Nissan unveils all-new Kicks in Japan

MANILA: Nissan has started selling another version of the Kicks e-Power in Japan today—which could mean that the Philippines will get an older version.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the powertrain of the Japan-spec Nissan Kicks?

The JDM Nissan Kicks uses a 5-in-1 e‑Power system composed of a motor, inverter, reducer, and increaser. This is paired with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine as a generator.
  • What is the ADAS suite of the Japan-spec Nissan Kicks?

The all-new Nissan Kicks in Japan comes with the ProPilot ADAS suite.
  • In a statement, Nissan said that the newly-marketed all-new Kicks—which is the model’s second-generation offering—evolved further as a compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) “suited for both everyday driving and leisure activities.”

This development came months after Nissan Thailand debuted a different version of the electrified crossover, similar to what was seen at the recently-concluded 10th Philippine International Motor Show.

    Vehicle specifications

    Exterior

Compared to the expected iteration that would hit the Philippine market soon, the all-new Nissan Kicks’ aesthetics come from an American football helmet design, as expressed by its wide, horizontal grille and distinct signature illumination.

Meanwhile, the bumpers of the model’s top-tier option are fitted with gloss black appliques, while the others have that distinctive sneaker-sole-inspired polygon pattern on the front bumper, side sills, and rear bumper.

Its rear is fitted with a rectangular black graphic and full-width taillights.

    Interior

Inside, the all-new Nissan Kicks offers a roomy, comfortable, and modern cabin.

Per Nissan, the vehicle provides class-leading knee room, headroom, and rear-seat width, complemented by the adoption of zero-gravity seats for both front and rear.

Its instrument panel, center console, and door trims are covered with a rich mix of synthetic leather and fabric.

Aside from that, the all-new Kicks features the NissanConnect infotainment system with a dual 12.3-inch display interface (depending on grade).

    Powertrain

Propelling the second-generation Nissan Kicks is the newly developed 5-in-1 ePower system (the first time in the Japanese market). Composed of a motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser, this unit is expected to ensure improved compactness, reduced weight, and increased rigidity. Further, this configuration is combined with a 1.4-liter dedicated power-generation engine (HR14DDe).

This model is also equipped with e4ORCE electric-drive all-wheel control technology to ensure responsive cornering performance and a smooth, comfortable ride.

Guaranteeing stable handling during cornering and reduced vibration is its high-rigidity body and newly designed suspension.

    Expanded safety technologies

Moreover, the all-new Kicks boasts that the ProPilot system (under Nissan’s 360-degree Safety Assist) will remain standard across all trims. This includes the Intelligent Around View Monitor that has the following features:

    • Front Wide View
    • Invisible Hood View
    • 3D View functions

Its Intelligent Emergency Braking system has also been enhanced, improving detection of pedestrians, oncoming vehicles, and crossing traffic at intersections.

Additionally, the Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention and Blind Spot Warning, as well as Rear Cross Traffic Alert are now available in the vehicle to boost rear-side safety support.

“Kicks is a core model for Nissan, and it plays an important role in delivering the value of electrification technologies to more customers; by introducing the third-generation ePOWER for the first time in the Japanese market,” Nissan corporate executive responsible for Japan Marketing and Sales Akira Sugimoto said.

“This model reflects Nissan’s distinctive commitment to design, driving performance, and comfort, delivering a model that stimulates a touch of refined playfulness for discerning customers.”

    Possible PH-spec Nissan Kicks

On the other hand, the Nissan Kicks version that will likely enter the local market (following its reveal at the event organized by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Incorporated) sports a three-dimensional V-Motion grille flanked by slim upper-beam headlamps and three-line daytime running lamps.

Its back has an uncluttered rear panel, a parting line in the middle, and hexagonal taillamps.

Its infotainment is anticipated to be the same as the Japan-spec Kicks.

In terms of powertrain, the Nissan Kicks e-Power in Thailand still uses the system composed of a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a 2.06-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.

Nissan Philippines already started the pre-order period for the country-bound Kicks e-Power during the 10th PIMS.
