Audi Q7 scores 100% in Euro NCAP post-crash safety category

MANILA: The third-generation Audi Q7 (G8) has become the first-ever production car to achieve a perfect 100 percent score in the European New Car Assessment Program’s (Euro NCAP) Post-Crash category. 

Notably, this is considered, even by Audi itself, as one of the strictest categories in the Euro NCAP’s barrage of tests. This is because of the “golden hour,” the precious 60 minutes during which rescuers must extricate occupants of a crashed vehicle and provide first aid to ensure their survival.

In the case of the Q7 tested, it received perfect ratings for post-crash intervention, vehicle extrication, and rescue information tests.

Post-crash intervention, according to Euro NCAP, refers to the availability of advanced emergency calling, which the Q7 can perform automatically via third-party services as needed. It also automatically transmits specific details of the crash to emergency services. Also under post-crash intervention is the automatic activation of brakes and hazard lamps. 

Vehicle extrication under Euro NCAP, on the other hand, covers support for easy self- or assisted exit from a crash vehicle, as well as energy management. The latter is crucial because the mild-hybrid Q7 can isolate its high-voltage battery pack in the event of a collision. 

Last but not least under post-crash intervention is rescue information. Per Euro NCAP, this pertains to the availability of a rescue sheet that offers critical information for quick patient extrication, as well as the rescue guide - a detailed technical instruction list that can assist emergency providers during vehicle-related rescues. 

Apart from its perfect Euro NCAP score for post-crash safety. The third-generation Audi Q7 also scored relatively high in crash protection (88 percent). Particular crash tests in which it received high scores include: 

• Frontal impact offset crash test - 95 percent for front occupants and 100 percent for rear occupants
• Frontal impact full-width crash test - 95 percent for front occupants and 90 percent for rear occupants
• Frontal impact virtual tests and sled - 92 percent for driver and 97 percent for front passenger
• Side impact - 100 percent score for all tests
• Rear impact static - 100 percent for both front and rear occupants

Overall, the Audi Q7 has a five-star rating from the Euro NCAP. For reference, its crash-avoidance score from the testing organization totaled 77 percent, while it received a 72 percent rating in the safe-driving category.

While the Euro NCAP safety rating of the third-generation Audi Q7 is impressive, do be aware that the Q7 that’s sold locally is the older second-generation (4M). 

For those curious, the older Audi Q7 we have here in the Philippines also has a relatively high Euro NCAP five-star rating under the group’s old testing standards. It has 92 percent adult occupant protection, after all. 

Specifications-wise, the locally available Audi Q7 TFSI S Line variant uses a 3.0-liter gasoline 48-volt mild-hybrid mill producing up to 340 horsepower and 500 Newton-meters of torque. 

Inside the seven-seater model is a three-row layout equipped with leather-upholstered seats, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a power tailgate, a Bang & Olufsen speaker set, and up to 1,993 liters of cargo space.
