BYD Cars PH rolls out Sealion 5 DM-i

MANILA: BYD Cars Philippines has expanded its DM-i stable with the addition of the Sealion 5 hybrid subcompact sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Touted as a vehicle for “the practical and modern millennial,” the Ayala-led Chinese new-energy car brand’s latest offering packs technological features BYD is known for in a capable and easy-to-drive ride.

Hybrid powertrain

Under the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i’s hood is a hybrid system comprised of an electric motor and a 12.9 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine acting as its generator (commonly-known as range extender).

The powertrain is able to dish out:

Propelled by electricity alone, the subcompact SUV is able to drive up to 71 kilometers (km) with a combined range of 1,001 km, reach a top speed of 170 kilometers per hour (kph), and zoom from a standstill to 100 kph in 8.3 seconds.

To juice the battery up, the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i uses a Type 2 alternating current charger at 3.3 kWh. It can accommodate up to 52 liters of fuel.

Size advantage

Among the players in the subcompact SUV segment, the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i is currently the largest, measuring 4,738 millimeters (mm) long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,710 mm high. It also has a wheelbase of 2,712 mm.

Bolstering its strong road presence are notable appointments such as striking headlamps with daytime running lights, eye-catching LED taillights, and a set of sporty-looking 18-inch wheels.

Its large size translates to practical cargo space, with the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i capable of carrying up to 520 to 1,339 liters of luggage.

Tech-heavy interior

Inside, BYD’s newest offering welcomes would-be owners with leather seating and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In addition, some soft-touch materials can be found on its dashboard and door trims.

Once the driver gets comfortable, he (or she) is greeted by an eight-inch digital instrument cluster accompanied by a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment display. The latter has wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity.

BYD Cars Philippines highlights its “Hi BYD” voice assistant with an active response time of 611 milliseconds and an online identification response time of 1.57 seconds.

Other notable technological amenities come in the form of a dual-zone air conditioning system with dedicated vents for the rear occupants as well as NFC key and BYD Connect app compatibility.

Variant, pricing

The BYD Sealion 5 DM-i is available in a single variant. It is priced at P1.248 million. 

For a limited time, BYD Cars Philippines is offering the subcompact SUV at an introductory price of P1.198 million with a downpayment cost of just P88,000.
