BYD Seal receives 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating

MANILA: The BYD Seal electric vehicle (EV) has attained a five-star safety rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia (ASEAN NCAP). 

According to the vehicle safety testing organization, the BYD-made sedan received weighted scores of 38.44 out of 40 for adult occupant protection (AOP), 16.60 out of 20 for child occupant protection (COP), 19.52 out of 20 for vehicle safety assist, and 17.5 out of 20 for motorcyclist safety. The aforementioned scores all sum up to a total weighted score of 92.07, which ASEAN NCAP has described as “impressive.”

In certain areas, such as the side impact test under AOP and COP, the sedan notably returned perfect scores. Moreover, it likewise had a strong showing in the safety assist tests, with mostly perfect scores except for the seatbelt reminder (SBR) system test. 

Interestingly, ASEAN NCAP noted that only the Philippine and Vietnamese versions of the BYD Seal came standard with SBR. For reference, the version the organization tested was the one currently sold in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. 

But while the test vehicle may share the same advanced driver-assist systems and an identical body structure with the Philippine-spec version, it does have one more airbag (nine in total) than the locally available Seal Advanced and Performance trims.

BYD Seal in PH

In the Philippine market, the BYD Seal currently retails at P1.998 million for the Advanced trim and P2.548 million for the Performance variant. 

For its powertrain, the locally available BYD Seal Performance uses two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) sending power to all four wheels. At maximum, the said setup can produce up to 522 horsepower and 670 Newton-meters of torque.
