Confirmed: Mercedes-Benz will continue making V12 engines, might be hybrids

MANILA: Amidst its dropout from Mercedes-AMG, the V12 engine is here to stay. Mercedes-Benz will continue to carry the 12-cylinder mill in S Class models such as the S 600. It’s also likely that the engine will be soldered on the S Class Coupe and in next-generation Mercedes-Maybachs including the S 600, S 650 Sedan, and S 650 Pullman.

When Mercedes-AMG launched the S65 Final Edition at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, we thought it marked the end of the iconic engine. Ola Källenius, Head of Mercedes-Benz and Daimler AG Chairman of the Board of Management, put these rumors to rest.
Daimler AG is a multinational German automotive corporation who is both owner and shareholder of several car manufacturers. These include Mercedes-Benz,

Mercedes-AMG, and Mercedes-Maybach.
In an interview at the Guangzhou Auto Show, Källenius confirmed that the V12 is returning in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S Class. No other details were given about the engine. However, it may be an updated version of the twin-turbo 6-liter V12 mill found inside Mercedes-Benz S 600 and Mercedes-Maybach S 600, or a new unit based on the smaller V8.

Everything is still pure speculation at this point. But we do know that the V12 is no longer suited for modern times. Over the years, car makers have found ways to develop compact engines that can deliver just as much power while improving their efficiency and reducing their impact to the environment.

We also know that Mercedes is only phasing out the V12 in performance-driven AMG models. Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG Chairman of the Board of Management, said it himself: “Eventually, the 12-cylinder engine will be phased out at AMG.”

If we consider Källenius’ confirmation of a V-12 sporting Mercedes-Benz, fans can still look forward to seeing the engine on Benz and Maybach models. And since there are stricter emission standards underway, the automaker will likely comply by developing more efficient and environmental-friendly V12 engines with hybrid configurations.

When asked whether the V12 will make its way into the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, Källenius quickly responded: “We have no plans for a Maybach GLS V12.”

Maybach GLS 600 is a luxury SUV that recently debuted at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China. Besides executive seats that lets rear passengers stretch it out, the vehicle has its own signature fragrance and optional fridge for champagne bottles and flutes.
