Ford issues recall for Mustang due to steering assist issue

MANILA: Ford has issued a recall for the previous generation Mustang due to a faulty power steering control module (PSCM). According to the Michigan-based car manufacturer, the fault manifests with the unintended oscillation (alternating clockwise – counterclockwise) of the pony car’s steering wheel while driving. 

The said unintended steering assist problem can be caused by the failure of the system’s primary steering torque sensor. As such, the brand has deemed it a safety risk as it can lead to loss of control of the vehicle. 

The American car company is currently working to produce a module software update to remedy the issue. Once the fix is rolled out in August 2024, owners of the affected Mustang units will be notified by email and directed to visit the nearest Ford dealership for a service appointment. 

According to a report released by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 30,735 Mustangs are covered by the recall. The report also indicated that the affected units were produced by the Blue Oval brand from September 15, 2022, to April 5, 2023. Importantly, the NHTSA recall report confirmed that no accidents have been recorded due to this issue. 

On the official Ford global website, owners of the previous-generation Mustang can enter vehicle information numbers (VINs) to identify if a particular unit is affected by the recall. The American pony car’s VIN can be found on the right-hand side floor panel, left side of the instrument panel, on the right-hand door aperture, or on the vehicle’s registration document (certificate of registration). 

For now, Ford Philippines has yet to share if local units of the Mustang are affected.
