Toyota GR 86 to join in TGR PH Cup?

New class could also be subject to biofuel use

Toyota GR 86 to join in TGR PH Cup?

MANILA: The Toyota GR 86 might make its way to the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Philippine Cup this month.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is the Toyota GR 86 officially joining the TGR Philippine Cup at Clark?

Toyota Motor Philippines has not made an official announcement, but there is strong speculation it will. A promotional post for the September 12 race leg at Clark International Speedway subtly featured a blurred image of the GR 86 alongside the staple Vios and Tamaraw cars, hinting the two-door coupe may debut in its own racing category.
  • What are the performance specifications of the Toyota GR 86?

The locally available model is powered by a 2.4-liter engine producing 233 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It is equipped with McPherson struts in the front, a double wishbone setup in the rear, all-around ventilated disc brakes, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
  • Such a hunch came from TGR Philippines’ social media post inviting fans to watch the fourth and final leg of its one-make race series on September 12 at the Clark International Speedway.

Blurred yet easily noticeable is the Toyota GR 86, which can be spotted alongside series staples, the Vios and Tamaraw

And while it has made quite a few appearances in the races, this time we might see the nameplate have its own category. After all, its catchphrase is “Race Your Greatness.”

    Other stories:

    The lab keeps rolling

The TGR Philippine Cup, has been, for the past few races, a rolling laboratory of sorts.

For one, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) started taking the “traveling circus” approach to it races, and took the series to places where it can reach more audiences like the second leg of the 2025 season, which took place at Villar City in Cavite; as well as its debut at the Batangas Racing Circuit for the third leg of the 2026 season

In addition, the car manufacturer also began using biofuels to power its Toyota Vios and Tamaraw one-make race cars. And who knows, the GR 86 might actually use a biofuel blend in the upcoming race or—better yet—we might even see a hydrogen-powered version of the vehicle as TMP pushes for a more sustainable race series.

At the time of writing, TMP has yet to make an announcement about including the GR 86 in the TGR Philippine Cup. But seeing how the company is expanding its presence in the local grassroots motorsport scene, adding a class for the more capable two-door coupe might be the next sensible move.

    Toyota GR 86 specifications

To give us an idea of how the Toyota GR 86 can perform as a race machine, here is a quick look at its specifications.

Powering the locally available model is a 2.4-liter engine mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. The said setup produces 233 horsepower and 250 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

Now, for comparison’s sake, the souped-up Toyota Tamaraw one-make race car (Luis Gono from Autoplus told Zigwheels Philippines in a previous report) makes 180 horses and 460 Nm, thanks to a few tweaks to push the limits of the small commercial vehicle.

With a few upgrades of its own, we could see the figures from the Toyota GR 86—come race day—move up higher.

In stock form, the Toyota GR 86 is fitted with McPherson struts at the fore and a double wishbone arrangement at the back. Halts and deceleration are facilitated by ventilated disc brakes, all around.

The rear-wheel-driven automobile rides on a set of 18-inch alloy wheels with 215/40-series tires.

Out of the dealership, it rolls out with a seven-inch thin-film transistor instrument cluster and an eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which might get scrapped should it be turned into a race vehicle.

For those wondering how much it costs, the Toyota GR 86 will set buyers back some P2.736 million to P2.871 million.
