Geely Motor PH to launch EX-5 EM-i this year?

MANILA: Geely Motor Philippines (GMP) is set to launch a new vehicle in the first quarter of this year, and it could be the plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) version of the EX-5 crossover. 

The aforementioned upcoming launch was hinted at by two separate teaser clips posted by GMP on its official Facebook page. 

Like most teasers, these showed a car draped in shadow and made no mention of the vehicle’s name. However, their LED headlamp pattern was clear to see and could be easily compared to the global version, which has the exact same design. 

For now, Geely’s local arm has yet to share any specifications, nor has it declared an exact launch date. As such, let’s take a gander at the global version to see what would-be adopters can expect from the Geely EX-5 EM-i.

Geely EX-5 EM-i: global specs, features

The Geely EX-5 EM-i runs on the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform. Apart from the EX-5, it is currently utilized by numerous models in the Galaxy lineup in China. 

For its powertrain, the hybrid version of the EX-5 is propelled by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor and a 60.22-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium iron phosphate battery. The said powertrain, which is dubbed the “11-in-1 E-Drive System,” can produce up to 215 horsepower (hp) and 320 Newton-meters (Nm). It also boasts a range of up to 430 kilometers. 

To note, the model’s Australia-spec Long Range trim has an advertised New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) fuel efficiency rating of 22.72 kilometers per liter (kpl). The one they tested in the Land Down Under, however, gained a Guinness World Record, specifically the title of “Lowest fuel consumption driving the Sydney–Melbourne Coastal Drive by a plug-in hybrid powered production sport utility vehicle.” During the record run, the model managed to return around 26.11 kpl. 

Inside the Geely EX-5 EM-i is a five-seater layout equipped with leather upholstery and a well-equipped dashboard. The said dash of the hybrid features a triple-screen layout, including a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, and a 13.8-inch heads-up display (HUD). 

Per Geely, the EX-5 EM-i also has the following creature comforts:

• Power-adjust/ventilated front seats
• Wireless smartphone charging pad
• Automatic climate control
• Keyless entry
• Digital rearview mirror
• Vehicle-to-load function
• Over-the-air software updates
• Flat-bottom steering wheel
• Panoramic sunroof
• Up to 2,065 liters of cargo space (rear seats folded)

Another unique feature of the Geely EX-5 EM-i is the “Flyme Sound System,” which boasts an independent 1,000-watt amplifier and a total of 16 speakers. 

Safety-wise, the PHEV nameplate comes with a comprehensive advanced driver assist suite (ADAS) consisting of adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, a 360-degree view camera, rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and emergency maneuver assist - among others. 

Thanks to the aforementioned, Geely says that the EX-5 EM-i has a five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP).
