Incoming Denza D9 makes Goodwood debut

MANILA: The incoming Denza D9 made its debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Produced by BYD’s premium, tech-oriented sub-brand, the Denza D9 is a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that mixes sustainable powertrains with a cabin honed to deliver business-class comfort.

The nameplate was joined by the Denza B5 — a premium sport utility vehicle that brings the appeal of an off-road focus to the range — and Z9GT grand tourer.

“We’re thrilled to be introducing Denza to UK (United Kingdom) customers, especially at the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is a brand that has always had its roots in European design, in particular, and we’re confident that British car enthusiasts will find inspiration in how Denza blends that influence with our sophisticated technologies, the finest craftsmanship, and, for the first time in this segment, a true focus on efficient, sustainable new-energy powertrains,” BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li commented.

European influence

Denza began as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. Founded back in 2010, it is now wholly owned by the former but its European genes can still be seen in how its vehicles are designed and what luxurious appointments they offer.

Heading the direction of how Denza automobiles are designed is renowned German designer Wolfgang Egger. Supporting his vision is the colossal development department at BYD, with more than 120,000 engineers working constantly on innovative technologies that enhance the user experience.

“There are some rules in design, just as in architecture. Every line, every graphic, every surface must have a relationship together and make sense. True lines enhance the beauty of the sculpture, and this is what we have worked towards with Denza design,” Egger commented. 

In the case of the Denza D9, the MPV packs some premium appointments, which are typical of European cars. Things like “real wood trims” in the cabin (according to Denza’s website), leather seating, and technologically advanced amenities — like dedicated screens behind the front seats.

Denza D9: possible PH specifications

In a report by Zigwheels Philippines’s Online Content Manager, he noted that the upcoming Denza D9 could be fitted with BYD’s DM-i powertrain, based on the homologation papers approved by the Land Transportation Office for the MPV.

For those familiar with the brand, BYD’s DM-i technology uses a hybrid system that prioritizes electric propulsion with the gasoline engine acting only as a generator for the battery — aka a range extender.

Also based on the paperwork, the upcoming Denza D9 can make as much as 228 horsepower with a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour.
