Mapua University’s Cardinal One receives Technical Innovation Award at Shell Eco-marathon APAC, ME

MANILA: Mapua University’s Cardinal One team was honored with the “Technical Innovation” award at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2024, held at the Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia. 

According to Shell Pilipinas, the award for the aforementioned team recognizes its members' ability to integrate technologies into vehicle design. Furthermore, the accolade also highlighted the student team’s high technical proficiency and creativity. 

For those unaware, the Shell Eco-marathon is a race entered by teams formed by university students. Instead of aiming for the fastest lap times, the competition focuses on creating a vehicle with the best fuel or energy economy. 

At the event, the Cardinal One team also finished in seventh place in the internal combustion-powered prototype category. The group’s vehicle managed to attain a fuel economy of 274 kilometers per liter. 

Other teams who made it through the event’s initial technical inspection include Eco Archers from De La Salle University, UMindanao Wildcats from University of Mindanao, Team Siklab from Jose Rizal University, and Team Kalasag from Adamson University. 

While unable to advance into the fuel economy race’s final stages, XU Mekan-Eco from Xavier University and Hygears from the Polytechnic University of the Philipines showcased their respective talents in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. 

“It is truly impressive to see the high standards of performance and innovative ideas generated by these young thinkers, the changemakers of tomorrow,” Global General Manager of Shell Eco-marathon Norman Koch said. 

“Despite facing various challenges throughout the competition, they remained resilient and achieved remarkable results in designing energy-efficient vehicles,” Koch added. 

The next Shell Eco-marathon will be held in Doha, Qatar, next year.
