MG to mass-produce semi-solid-state batteries

MANILA: Morris Garages (MG) becomes the first manufacturer to mass-produce semi-solid state batteries, dubbed SolidCore Battery. 

Per the SAIC-owned European car brand, the new battery system promises improved electric vehicle (EV) range, faster charging, and enhanced safety. 

“As the first manufacturer globally to achieve mass production of semi-solid state batteries, MG is setting a new benchmark in electrification,” the company wrote in a press release. 

“The technology delivers enhanced range, faster charging capability, refined power delivery, improved safety, and robust performance in low-temperature conditions,” it added.

MG SolidCore Battery 

The MG SolidCore Battery was built to meet the evolving demands of car buyers, with growing emphasis on driving range, performance, and reliability across diverse climates. 

MG explained that these batteries have solid-state electrolytes within each cell, which form a protective barrier to extend lifespan while ensuring full compliance with future regulatory standards. 

The architecture, the United Kingdom-headquartered car brand noted, performs exceptionally in low-temperature conditions, enabling immediate vehicle start-up without preheating and providing improved acceleration compared with conventional EVs under similar conditions. 

One caveat, though, the MG SolidCore Battery is designed specifically for the European market and is engineered to accommodate regional road conditions, climate variations, and regulatory requirements. 

It will be introduced in MG electric vehicles in Europe at the end of 2026. 

MG Hybrid+ technology 

MG also highlighted its new Hybrid+ technology, which uses advanced software and hardware to optimize fuel consumption, deliver power more quickly, and create an even more seamless integration between mechanics and electrification for improved refinement and driving experience. 

Other enhancements include a larger 1.83-kilowatt-hour high-capacity core battery to increase electric-only range and an innovative three-speed hybrid transmission for optimizing instant, “electric-first” torque. 

Of note, the system is already available to Filipino car buyers via three models. 

First is the MG HS Hybrid+, a flagship hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) combining performance and advanced technology. For those wanting a smaller footprint, the MG ZS Hybrid+ — MG’s best-selling compact SUV — is now enhanced with hybrid efficiency. 

Lastly, the MG3 Hybrid+ is a fuel-efficient hybrid hatchback designed for modern urban driving, bringing MG’s latest electrified innovations closer to everyday motorists. 

“The introduction of MG’s latest battery and hybrid technologies globally signals an exciting direction for the brand, and one that we are eager to bring closer to the Philippine market,” MG Motor Philippines President Wei Wei Zhang was quoted as saying. 

“With Hybrid+ already available in the Philippines, this represents only the beginning of our electrification journey. As we continue to expand our lineup, our focus remains on providing Filipino customers with global-quality vehicles that combine innovation, performance, and everyday practicality — supporting the country’s transition toward smarter and more sustainable mobility,” he added.
