Mitsubishi Q2 sales in North America fall amid industry-wide challenges

MANILA: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA), which recently marked 40 years of commercial operations in the US, has reported sales for the second quarter of 2022. Reflecting similar issues across the auto industry, the supply shortages of many vehicle lines restricted overall sales to 21,872, a year-over-year decline. However, sales of the brand's flagship vehicle, the 2022 Outlander, defied the overall trend and were up 55.9% from the same period in 2021, thanks to Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in Japan's efforts to maximize the model's inventory for US customers.

Since its debut last year, the 2022 Outlander has won numerous awards from both consumers and the media. Since the nameplate was first introduced in the US over two decades ago, the seven-seater sports utility vehicle (SUV) experienced its best-four consecutive quarters of retail-only sales. April was the fourth-best single retail month ever for the Outlander.

Other major sales successes included the Eclipse Cross, with 5,712 units sold in the first half, up 31% from the same period in 2021, and the Outlander PHEV, with 1,126 units sold, up 76% from the first half of 2021.

A total of 21,872 units were sold across the entire Mitsubishi lineup for the quarter, with Outlander accounting for 46.8% by volume, followed by Outlander Sport at 22.4% and Eclipse Cross at 7.9%.

The inventory of MMNA's dealer partners continues to be negatively affected by supply chain issues and is still significantly below customer demand, as is the case across the industry.
