The mill can deliver up to 214 horsepower and 335 Newton-meters of torque. In the second installment of the Leaf Insights video series, the Japanese automaker shared that the electric car now comes with:
- Enhanced suspension and maneuverability
- Improved heat regeneration
- More refined cabin
“The all-new Leaf delivers a responsive, smooth and confident drive. All elements have been optimized to support efficiency,” Nissan Global Product Strategy Vice President Richard Candler said.
Here are some details about the third-generation Nissan Leaf.
Vehicle specifications
Nissan noted that the Nissan Leaf would be the first to adopt the brand’s all-new three-in-one electric powertrain. This design is 10-percent smaller compared to the one used in the outgoing version.
On select trims, the aforementioned mill can deliver the following numbers:
|
Maximum output (in horsepower) |
214 |
|
Peak torque (in Newton-meters) |
335 |
Further, the car’s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) unit has been moved under the hood, rather than behind the instrument panel — which resulted to a more spacious cabin.
The company also claimed that the all-new Leaf’s cabin became two decibels quieter than the second-generation offering when tested at urban speeds of 40 kilometers per hour.
Nissan also increased the lateral stiffness of the all-new Leaf’s multi-link rear suspension system by 66 percent — complementing the CMF-EV platform and a more rigid body structure to guarantee enhanced agility and improved ride comfort.
While it will come with 19-inch wheels, the new energy vehicle now has 100.076 turning radius — improving by 0.1 meters that boosted its maneuverability in urban environments — thanks to the upgraded rack electronic power steering system (resulting in a minimum turning radius of 5.3 meters).
“The top priority for our engineering team was optimizing thermal management and never wasting energy. We even capture the heat produced by the on-board charger to warm up the battery,” Chief Vehicle Engineer Hiroki Isobe — who oversaw the development in Atsugi, Japan — said.
To maintain optimum battery performance and conserve energy to extend range, the all-new Nissan Leaf’s newly adopted liquid-cooled batteries utilize a new thermal recovery system that harvests heat produced by the On-Board Charger (OBC) to warm the battery — enhancing regeneration potential in cold weather.
