Nissan unveils next-gen ProPilot ahead of 2027 launch
System capable of self-driving in Central Tokyo
MANILA: Ahead of its introduction in 2027, Nissan Motor Corporation has unveiled the prototype of its next-generation ProPilot advanced driver-assist technology (ADAS). The aforementioned are currently being tested on a fleet of Ariya units deployed all over central Tokyo.

The Nissan Ariya is being used to test the next-gen ProPilot ADAS in Tokyo.While still in the prototype stage, the next-gen ProPilot is said to be capable of self-driving even in its highly urban testing stage - the capital of Japan. As the carmaker disclosed, its capability for autonomous travel within the city is thanks to the utilization of the “Wayve artificial intelligence (AI) driver” software, along with the Nissan “Ground Truth Perception” next-generation light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system.
Next-gen ProPilot: hardware
Furthermore, Nissan disclosed the suite of hardware that comprises the next-generation ProPilot.

All the said components are fed into the Waybe AI driver software to enable the car to react quickly to changing road conditions. Nissan even claimed that it is able to make decisions by being aware of cause and effect, like how its behavior on the road will affect other drivers.
Additionally, the Yokohama-headquartered marque claims that its new Ground Truth Perception LiDAR sensor has an improved range, nighttime functionality, and accuracy.

“Our current ProPILOT 2.0 system has been well received, but Nissan’s next-generation ProPILOT technology will bring even more innovative features and deliver the feeling that a skilled human driver is behind the wheel,” Chief Technology Officer of Nissan Eiichi Akashi said.
“It will adapt to more complex traffic conditions and truly provide greater confidence and peace of mind—enhancing safety not only for the driver, but for everyone using the road,” Akashi added.

Notably, Nissan also tested a similar system on the Serena minivan within Yokohama’s Minato Mirai area. It was likewise capable of self-driving, but it had far more sensory equipment compared to the newer Ariya prototypes currently being tested in Central Tokyo.
Nissan ADAS in PH
As of this writing, Nissan has yet to introduce a Philippine-spec nameplate equipped with the ProPilot ADAS suite. The said system has remained exclusive for the Japanese and North American markets.
