Porsche’s electric boat sets speed record

MANILA: Porsche’s electric boat, which was jointly developed with Austrian boat builder Frauscher, has set a new speed record at the 12th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. 

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom, which borrows the all-electric powertrain from the Macan Turbo Electric, has an average speed of 49.84 knots or 92.3 kilometers per hour (kph). 

“We are very happy about the success at the event. It proves that Porsche E-Performance enables top performance not only on the road, but also on the water,” Porsche Macan Product Line Vice President Jörg Kerner commented. 

For reference, the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric puts out the following figures:

Its top speed clocks in at 260 kph with a zero-to-100 kph acceleration time of 3.3 seconds, with launch control. 

Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom in numbers 

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom has adapted the Macan Turbo’s powertrain for use in water. Therefore, it packs the same permanent magnet synchronous motor as the latter, as well as the high-voltage battery that juices the electric powerplant.

“We are very proud that we were able to show the full potential of the Frauscher x Porsche as part of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge,” Frauscher Bootswerft Managing Director Stefan Frauscher said in a press release. 

“This success not only underlines the boat’s technical innovation, but also marks an important milestone in the development of electric propulsion solutions in the maritime sector. The combination of Porsche’s drive technology with the boatbuilding know-how of our boatyard has resulted in an electric boat that is incomparable,” he added. 

According to Porsche, the boat attracted the attention of Prince Albert II of Monaco, with the Monegasque royalty having the eFantom explained to him in detail by Frauscher on the sidelines of the event. 

Elite elegance 

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom fielded in Monaco was a fully standard production model. 

It was painted in Porsche’s Oakgreen Metallic Neo color with a closed foredeck. It measures 8,670 millimeters (mm) long and 2,490 mm wide. 

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom is an electric day cruiser with exceptional performance, state-of-the-art technology, and stylish aesthetics. 

Just as two-door Porsche sports cars are available as coupes and convertibles, among other variants, Frauscher offers the choice between the Runabout and Air, in other words, between a closed foredeck, a classic look, a cabin under the foredeck, or a center helm with a seating and lounging area at the bow.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom is manufactured at the Frauscher boatyard in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria. The German carmaker supplies the high-voltage battery and the drive system, including the control unit, as pre-assembled modules, while Frauscher works on the final assembly, sales logistics, and after-sales management.
