Should Mitsubishi bring back the Outlander PHEV in PH?

MANILA: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has reported that the Mitsubishi Outlander has become the number one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) for fiscal year 2025.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the top-spec version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Japan?

The top-spec version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Japan is the Black Edition seven-seater.
  • How many units of the Outlander PHEV did Mitsubishi sell in Japan for the fiscal year 2025?

Mitsubishi has sold 7,794 units of the Outlander PHEV in Japan for the fiscal year 2025.
  • Notably, the brand has sold a total of 7,794 units in Japan. This marks the Outlander’s second year on the top of the JDM sales charts for PHEV models.

Furthermore, as of March 2025, the model has already breached the 100,000 sales milestone in the Japanese market. The vehicle has also ranked as the number one PHEV vehicle in Canada for three consecutive years.

With its success in its home market, it can be argued that the aforementioned electrified model could very well be a big-ticket hybrid model for Mitsubishi here in the Philippines. The local market, after all, is currently seeing a strong rally when it comes to PHEV nameplates - yes, including those that are in the more “premium” side of the said category.

If one remembers, the previous iteration of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was sold in the Philippines at P2.998 million. The price sounds steep, but do be aware that this was before legislative measures that now make electrified vehicles more accessible.

In the Land of the Rising Sun, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a seven-seater or five-seater, four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle (SUV). Its top-spec Black Edition seven-seater trim retails at 6.826 million Yen, or around P2.57 million at current exchange rates.

Propelling the model is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder MIVEC engine paired with two electric motors. On its own, the Outlander’s gasoline mill can produce up to 131 horsepower (hp) and 195 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. On the one hand, its front and rear electric motors can deliver a combined output of 113 hp and 255 Nm.

For its battery, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses a lithium-ion pack that provides an electric-only range of 102 kilometers, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC). The model also features a regenerative braking system, one-pedal driving, and selectable drive modes.

Style-wise, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV currently sold in Japan follows the prevailing design language of the Tokyo-based car maker. Specifically, the Outlander PHEV wears a front face similar to the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, which features the Dynamic Shield grille design.

The impactful-looking front end is paired with a high-roofed body featuring relatively tall windows and plenty of character lines on the sides. Furthermore, the top-spec JDM Black Edition adds additional flair with dark emblems and blacked-out LED lighting bezels, grille, and skid plates.

Other notable exterior equipment on the nameplate includes headlight washers, adaptive LED headlamps, power-folding/adjustable side mirrors, and roof rails, among others.

Inside the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Black Edition, the seating layout is seven- or five-seater, depending on the sub-variant. These are equipped with leather upholstered seats, automatic air-conditioning, and power-adjustable front seats with ventilation.

For its screens, the model provides a 12.3-inch full LCD digital gauge, a head-up display, and a 12.3-inch infotainment system linked to a 12-piece Yamaha speaker set. Topping up devices inside the Outlander PHEV is done via a wireless charging pad or its several USB ports.

Other noteworthy amenities found inside the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV include:

    • Advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS)
    • Voice recognition
    • 40:20:40 split-folding second row
    • Roll-up sunshades
    • Luggage underbox
    • 12-volt accessory outlet

The ADAS suite on the Mitsubishi model is a level 2 autonomous driving system that can handle automatic speed regulation and lane-keeping via the Mi-Pilot. Additionally, the hybrid SUV features Super-All Wheel Control and active yaw control.
