The Faulty Airbags are Persistent, BMW i3 and MINI are Recalled

MANILA: The words faulty airbags raise the eyes as it indeed marks the biggest recall of auto industry up-till now. The Honda, Mazda, and Nissan recall over faulty Takata airbags are old that BMW has also joined. BMW US had recently issued a recall for a total of 6073 vehicles comprising of i3 electric cars and several MINI Cooper models. The recall is mainly due to a manufacturing error of front passenger side airbag.

It is said that at the event of crash, the faulty airbag might not deploy properly to restrain the passenger as a result increasing the risks for front seat passenger. In a statement issued by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the models affected by this recall include 923 units of the BMW i3 (2014 to 2015 model year) and the remaining 5,150 affected vehicles, comprise of the two-door MINI Cooper and Cooper S (2014 to 2016 model year); two-door Mini John Cooper Works (2015 to 2016 model year); and four-door MINI Cooper and Cooper S (2015 to 2016 model year).

According to BMW US, no injuries or accidents have been reported because of this but as it is said that precaution is better than cure, therefore, customers who own the affected vehicles can contact the car maker to get a free replacement of the faulty airbags. Moreover, NHTSA also stated that the airbag supplier is indeed Takata but has no relation to the case where faulty inflators caused shower of metal shards in the cabin. Well.. well...this is like blunder from Takata. Now, the BMW and MINI owners in Philippines should go and get it check with the respective dealers once in order to play safe.
