Toyota Vios: Does it justify its price?
We can judge the importance of the Vios for Toyota Philippines by the fact that it is always in the news for one or the other (good) reason. For example, it was in March when Toyota introduced the XE variant of the Vios whose highlight was the addition of CVT at just Php 735,000. Then in May, the Japanese announced a discounted price for the Vios. And the latest news tells us that the Vios now comes with an additional 2-year warranty.
All these actions clearly indicate that Toyota understands the significance of its Vios in the Philippines market and wants it to be in the eyes of the Filipinos all the time. The Toyota Vios is certainly one of the best cars available in its segment offering a host of attractive features and thus,
is selling in good numbers. Another reason for its impressive sales figures could be the fact that, as we mentioned, it’s always in the news. The Toyota Vios price starts at Php 659,000 for its base model and there are nine variants available. So, does this popular sedan justify its price tag or is it just famous for nothing? Let us find out.
Toyota has done a great job when it comes to the aesthetics of the Vios. Of course, there are certain features that vary from variant to variant but there isn’t that much of a difference. The front of the car is ruled by two large headlamps that are one of the signature elements that will help you to identify this car.
Then we have the large blacked-out secondary grille along with nice cutouts for the fog lamps in the bumper. Oh, and how can we forget the LED daytime running lights located below the headlamps? They look good, too. These features add the required amount of sportiness to the car. Moving to the side, the alloy wheels look pretty decent, nothing extraordinary here but they get the job done.
Then comes the rear end of the Vios. It’s very much similar to the front in terms of the lights. The tail lights are huge in size and carry an LED line guide for extra sportiness. They look really great and suit the overall dimensions of the car. There’s even a small spoiler mounted on the tailgate.
The interior on the Vios is quite spacious and comfortable. The materials used are of good quality. Of course, it isn’t a full-fledged luxury sedan so don’t expect to see exceptional features. But yes, you won’t be disappointed with the cabin for the price you’d be paying.
Some of the highlighting elements of the Vios’ interior include Optitron instrument cluster and a seven-inch touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB, and AUX connectivity. It even supports Weblink for iOS and Android for smartphone integration. Then there are the paddle shifters and a couple of drive modes.
When it comes to the powertrain, the Toyota Vios specs show two engine options. There is a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine which produces 98 hp of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 123 Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. Then we have a slightly powerful 1.5-litre engine that churns out 106 hp of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. Both the engine options are available with either a manual or CVT gearbox.
Now, let’s about the aspect in which the Vios just blows its competition away - safety equipment. Toyota has provided numerous safety features which come as standard across all the variants. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re buying the base model or the range-topping model,
you’ll be protected in exactly the same manner. The list of safety features include seven SRS airbags (driver/passenger, side, curtain, knee), vehicle stability control, hill-start assist control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, seatbelts, child lock protection, and a high mount stop lamp.
Considering all the aspects of the Toyota Vios, we can say that it’s a great package. It offers good and attractive looks, spacious and comfortable interior with necessary features, optimally tuned engines for better performance and efficiency, and a plethora of safety features.
There might be certain areas where Toyota could have done things in a better way and perhaps, it will in the next iteration of the car. The current model is itself a good one and we don’t really have any complaints. Hence, we think that it justifies its price just fine.
