MANILA: The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) is set to take the lead in the ASEAN Automotive Federation’s Technical Committee for Motorcycles (AAF-TC5) until March 2029.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the ASEAN Automotive Federation’s Technical Committee for Motorcycles (AAF-TC5)?

The AAF-TC5 is a technical committee under the ASEAN Automotive Federation that represents the motorcycle business sectors of various ASEAN countries. It works on areas such as industry standardization, regulatory harmonization, and sustainability.
  • Who is the new chairman of the AAF-TC5?

Alexander Cumpas of Kawasaki Motors Philippines will serve as the new AAF-TC5 Chairman.
  • Per MDPPA, this positions the Philippines as the pacesetter in regional standardization, regulatory harmonization, and environmental sustainability initiatives across the ASEAN motorcycle industry.

The leadership of the AAF-TC5 under MDPPA is to be spearheaded by its new Chairman, Alexander Cumpas of Kawasaki Motors Philippines, MDPPA Secretary General Gilmar de Castro as Secretariat, Andrew Angeles of Honda Philippines Incorporated, and Joselito Ang of Suzuki Philippines Incorporated

“Taking on this role is an opportunity for MDPPA to contribute the experience and perspective of the Philippines motorcycle industry to a broader regional conversation,” AAF-TC5 Chairman Alexander Cumpas said.

“Motorcycle markets across ASEAN share many opportunities and challenges, especially with regard to harmonization and standardization. We are positive that this cooperation allows us to learn from one another while working toward approaches that support the continued development of the industry,” Cumpas added.

Apart from the MDPPA, other AAF-TC5 members include Asosiasi Industri Sepeda Motor Indonesia (AISI); the Motorcycle & Scooter Assemblers and Distributors Association of Malaysia (MASAAM); the Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA), and the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM). The aforementioned committee likewise functions in close coordination with the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), which offers guidance.

For the unaware, the AAF-TC5 is a component of the ASEAN Automotive Federation, an affiliate of the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The committee comprises members representing the motorcycle business sectors of various ASEAN countries. Each member is a national association or organization officially recognized as a representative of the motorcycle industry in its respective country.

The MDPPA, meanwhile, is a group that represents the Philippine local motorcycle industry. Its core members include the local arms of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and TVS. Apart from its goals of furthering the local motorcycle industry, it also promotes road safety, collaborates with government entities, and publishes up-to-date metrics on local motorcycle sales.
