In the current state of the Philippine automotive industry, it is clear to see that the all-electric crossover segment is heating up. This is evident from the fact that almost all locally present brands now have an entry in the said segment. 

Omoda knows the aforementioned, and so it has entered the local market with the E5 electric vehicle (EV) as one of its first-ever offerings.

As mentioned above, however, the Omoda E5 faces a slew of strong, similarly-priced rivals in the Philippines. So, what are these models? Let’s find out here. 

Omoda E5

Before listing the Omoda E5’s competitors, let’s first check out its specifications and features to serve as a baseline for comparison. 

Power-wise, the Omoda E5 uses a single electric motor setup paired with a 61-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. At maximum, it can produce up to 201 horsepower (hp) and 340 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It also has a range of 430 kilometers (km) from a single full charge, as well as a direct current (DC) fast-charging capability that can increase its battery levels from 30-80 percent in just 28 minutes. 

On the outside, the Omoda E5 comes with a striking look with shark-looking LED fixtures, an elegant front clip with a closed-off grille, and a stylish rear section with an appropriately-sized spoiler and LED bar. 

The interior of the Omoda E5, meanwhile, comes fitted with a futuristic interior with dual 12.3-inch screens paired with an eight-piece Sony system. It also gets Intelligent Voice Control, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a sunroof, ventilated front seats, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Safety-wise, the model has what you’d expect from a modern crossover, as well as a suite of advanced driver assist systems, which include, but are not limited to: 

• Adaptive cruise control
• Blind spot monitoring
• Automatic emergency braking
• Lane departure warning
• Rear-cross traffic alert
• Traffic jam assist

As of this writing, the Omoda E5 starts at P1.499 million in the Philippine market.

BYD Atto 3

One notable competitor of the Omoda E5 in the Philippines is the BYD Atto 3. Currently, it has a price ranging from P1.598 million-P1.798 million. 

Propelling the BYD Atto 3 is a single permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) that can put out 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque. It also boasts a range of 480 km out of its 60.5 kWh battery, as well as a fast-charging feature that can top up its battery from 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

As  an EV, the BYD Atto 3 also comes with regenerative braking, as well as a DC fast charging port that can take its state of charge from 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

Style-wise, the current Philippine-spec Atto 3 wears an elegant take on the familiar crossover body style. It doesn’t use many sharp angles, but it has a sharp LED headlamp cluster, as well as an LED light bar in the rear. 

Other noteworthy exterior equipment of the Atto 3 includes power-folding side mirrors, power tailgate, a sunroof, automatic headlamp functionality, and roof rails. 

Like the other models on this list, the BYD-made EV crossover comes with a five-seater layout. It also has leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, an automatic air conditioning system, and a sunroof.

Geely EX5

Retailing at P1.799 million, the Geely EX5 might be slightly more expensive than the Omoda E5 but it is still a compact crossover EV. 

For its powertrain, the Geely-made all-electric nameplate uses a single PMSM that can generate up to 214 hp and 320 Nm. It also has a range of 425 km from its 60.22 kWh battery, as well as a fast charging rate of 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

Like its rivals listed above, the Geely EX5 also gets a regenerative braking system. It likewise has a vehicle-to-load feature. 

On the outside, the model was kitted out with LED lighting fixtures, a roof rack, a panoramic sunroof, automatic flush door handles, rain-sensing wipers, and a power tailgate. Unique to the model (at least within the segment) is its active grille shutters, which optimize the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile as needed. 

Inside the Geely EX5 is a five-seater cabin fitted with leather seats, power-adjustable front seats, automatic air conditioning, a 60:40 split folding rear seat, a heads-up display, and a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster.

It also has a comprehensive ADAS suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, collision mitigation support front/rear, rear cross traffic alert and braking, lane keep assist, emergency lane keep assist, lane change assist, traffic sign information system, and door open warning - among others.

Lynk & Co 02

Yet another competitor of the Omoda E5 is the Lynk & Co 02, which starts at P1.788 million in the Philippine market. 

Starting with its powertrain, the Lynk & Co 02 uses a single PMSM that can put out 268 hp and 343 Nm of torque. It also boasts a range of 435 km, a DC fast charger, a vehicle-to-load function, and regenerative braking. 

On the outside, the heavily stylized crossover is equipped with quadrilateral headlamps, a huge rear spoiler, a power tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, and a front trunk. Completing the appearance of the Lynk & Co model is a set of 19-inch wheels. 

Inside the vehicle, meanwhile, is an amply-spaced five-seater cabin fitted with leather upholstery. Everyone inside is kept cool by an automatic air conditioning system, while finding one’s preferred piloting position is done easily thanks to power-adjustable front seats. 

Handling on-board entertainment and navigation for the Lynk & Co 02 is a 15.4-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen is connected to a 14-piece Harman Kardon sound system.

Final thoughts

While the Omoda E5 appears to sit at a more affordable price point than many of its rivals, its on-paper specs show that it has enough amenities to put up a worthy fight. Even its powertrain’s output and range are largely comparable to those of its slightly pricier segment rivals. 

With that said, many will find the Omoda E5’s “value for money” element attractive. As such, we encourage those who like what they see in this nameplate to visit the nearest Omoda dealership to give this EV crossover a test drive.
