2027 Honda Civic Type R’s upgrades make us want the hatch back in PH

MANILA: The Honda Civic Type R just received an update—with enhancements that would make it a sound choice to be pick as a family car.

The four-door hatchback’s refreshed version boasts a more refined cockpit, updated amenities, improved safety to match its bolder aesthetics, improved engine cooling, and enhanced driving performance.

At this point, the Philippine market could only dream of having this as the nameplate was already replaced by the Prelude.

The Japanese automaker’s arm will start selling the 2027 Honda Civic Type R in United States dealerships this year, with a retail price of $48,695 (around P3.043 million).

"The legendary Civic Type R has embodied the Honda challenging spirit for three decades, leveraging our deep roots in motorsports with racetrack-proven engineering that maximizes performance without sacrificing Type R's civilized road manners," American Honda Motor Company Assistant Vice President of National Auto Sales Luis Guerra was quoted as saying.

"The refreshed 2027 Civic Type R honors that legacy by enhancing comfort, technology, and style without compromising the exhilarating driving experience that has defined the Civic Type R for six generations."

Vehicle specifications

The most prominent difference that the 2027 Honda Civic Type R has is its more aggressive front fascia, with a deeper front splitter for stronger downforce and a matching larger grille opening.

With the newest version, the car can be had in the newly introduced Meteorite Gray Metallic body color. Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl, and the iconic Championship White are still available.

Under the hood is a redesigned engine cover reminiscent of the engines in early-generation Type R models sold in its home country.

Amid its sporty, racing-inspired design, the 2027 Honda Civic Type R gets heated seats, while its red, high-friction, suede-like seat upholstery gains a new perforation design with distinctive black striping to reduce body slippage in high-G driving situations and improve breathability in high-contact areas.

The cabin also features premium elements that come in the form of:

• New diamond-pattern trim panel with a black surround
• Black air vent knobs and soft-touch materials
• Premium Ultrasuede on the upper instrument panel and front doors
• Aluminum shift knob, interior door handles, and console trim in a racier dark gray finish
• New black climate control knobs and silver front door panel trim
• New auto-dimming rearview mirror

Honda also slapped on more connectivity and convenience technologies, as the car now has Alexa built-in, as well as the model’s first integration of Google built-in, featuring Google Gemini, Google Maps, and Google Play.

The 2027 Honda Civic Type R also gets two USB-C ports in the center console above the Type R’s standard wireless phone charger.

Further, the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies in the new Civic Type R provides enhanced safety performance.

The Collision Mitigation Braking System with Pedestrian Detection gets improved motorcycle and bicycle visibility. Its adaptive cruise control has improved braking and acceleration response, while the Lane Keeping Assist System gains improved control over road camber and other disturbances for smoother operation.

To mitigate damage from multi-crash collisions, the model—for the first time—gets equipped with a Post-Collision Braking system.

Powering the model is still the same K20C turbocharged gasoline engine that can deliver 315 horsepower. This powertrain is made at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts.
