All-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV unveiled for EU market

MANILA: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has introduced the all-new Eclipse Cross electric vehicle (EV) for the European market.

The said model also takes its name from the Mitsubishi Eclipse, a sport compact two-door nameplate that was produced by the Japanese marque from 1990-2012. 

    Going back to the all-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV, it is actually a rebadged version of the Renault Scenic E-Tech, which is produced at the Ampere Douai facility in France.

    Powertrain

    Propelling the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a single electric motor setup paired with an 87-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. The said system has a maximum output of 214 horsepower and 300 Newton-meters of torque, as well as a range of 600 kilometers, according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

    For charging, the newly launched model comes standard with a 22-kilowatt alternating current (AC) port and a fast-charging direct current capability with a maximum capacity of 150 kilowatts (kW). Plus, the model comes with a regenerative braking system with selectable strength levels.

    Smooth in-city driving, meanwhile, is ensured by a one-pedal system that allows drivers to accelerate, slow down, and stop using only the accelerator.

    Exterior

    For its appearance, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV sports a distinctive look courtesy of the brand’s “Smart Armor” design language. Per the brand, the aforementioned provides the ride a rugged but sophisticated style.

    Dominating the model’s front end is an evolved version of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield. The aforementioned are flanked by sharp-looking headlamp clusters, J-shaped lines over its daytime running lamps, and a honeycomb pattern over its grille. 

    From the side, the model wears the typical crossover silhouette that was enhanced with a set of 20-inch alloy wheels. Its rear section, meanwhile, comes with added flair thanks to its horizontally-oriented LED taillights, and a chunky lower rear bumper. 

    The model also has roof rails, a black-colored roof, and an ample amount of black plastic claddings all around.

    For now, no exact sizing figures were shared by Mitsubishi, but the model slots into the brand’s lineup as a five-door compact crossover.

    Interior

    Inside the European-spec Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV is a five-seater layout enhanced by leather upholstery paired with satin silver accents. Mood inside the vehicle is likewise enhanced by an electrochromic panoramic glass roof and a 48-color ambient lighting system. Everyone inside, meanwhile, is kept comfy by an automatic climate control system.

    Positioned at the center of the vehicle’s dashboard is a 12.3-inch infotainment display with built-in Google software. Specifically, it comes pre-installed with the Google voice assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play (app store). 

    Connecting smartphones to the said screen is likewise made easy thanks to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, the model has plenty of USB ports and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Sound, on the other hand, is outputted by a Harman Kardon sound system.

    Mitsubishi didn’t provide an extensive list of driver-oriented amenities, but pictures shared by the brand indicate that the Eclipse Cross EV comes with the following:

    Ampere Douai Plant

    As mentioned above, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV will be produced at the Ampere Douai manufacturing facility in France.

    The said move was a result of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s partnership with electric vehicle specialist Ampere, which spun off from the Renault Group back in 2023. 

    Thanks to the said partnership, the Ampere Douai plant in France is now responsible for the production of six vehicles, namely:

    • Renault Scenic E-Tech
    • R5 E-Tech
    • Alpine A290
    • Nissan Micra EV
    • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV

    Interestingly, the Eclipse Cross EV will be the first-ever Mitsubishi vehicle to be produced in France.
