Land Rover displays truly digital Defender at 2020 CES
MANILA: The Land Rover Defender was one of the most anticipated and highly-awaited SUVs before it finally broke the cover. Following the official unveiling of the rugged SUV, the British automaker has now revealed the new 90 and 110 Defender SUVs at the ongoing 2020 Consumer Electronics Show. While the likes of Sony Vision-S concept have already attracted much attention and are doing rounds on the internet, the Defender SUV has also now come out with some of the world's first tech.
In order to achieve better connectivity and offer the users a seamless functionality experience, Land Rover has equipped with the Defender with dual-modem dual eSIM connectivity. Powering the tech are twin Qualcomm Snapdragon 820Am automotive platforms. Moreover, each of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820Am also features a Snapdragon X12 modem.
Thanks to the modern-day tech, the Land Rover Defender will now be able to receive hassle-free OTA updates around the world. Also, the SUV sports 14 updateable electronic modules, and the number will go up to 16 by 2021 and 45 in the near future. Playing the role of the infotainment system is a 10-inch touchscreen display called the Pivi Pro setup.
Since the Defender uses two LTE modems, the infotainment system can interact with two mobile devices simultaneously and let users stream music and perform other functions. Furthermore, the system updates itself in the background while users keep using other foreground apps and functions.
"With one LTE modem and eSIM dedicated to the Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) technology and the same set-up looking after music streaming and apps, New Defender has the digital capacity to keep customers connected, updated and entertained at all times anywhere in the world.
You could liken the design to a brain, with each half enjoying its own connection for unrivalled and uninterrupted service. Like the brain, one side of the system looks after logical functions, like SOTA, while the other takes care of more creative tasks", said Peter Virk, Director of Connected Car and Future Technology at Jaguar Land Rover.
As for the pricing, the Land Rover Defender 110 should start at £ 45,240 (roughly Php 3.04 million) for the masses in the UK.
