Mazda expands lineup with first-ever CX-50

MANILA: Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has officially unveiled the CX-50 through a virtual event yesterday, November 15. The Mazda CX-50 is an entirely new model which will be produced in the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) facility in Alabama, USA starting January 2022.

In a statement, MNAO President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Guyton said, “This new Mazda vehicle has been developed for North America, particularly to support the active and outdoor lifestyles of customers in this region. The CX-50 encourages people to immerse themselves in nature without compromising on the premium design and outstanding on-road performance Mazda is known for.”

As a new addition to the Mazda lineup, the CX-50 retains key Mazda attributes such as exceptional driving dynamics and a stunning aesthetic. Mazda has also enhanced this model’s capability to allow drivers to travel further into the outdoors and across various terrains.

Mazda’s signature natural driving experience is highlighted in the CX-50 to help boost the driver’s confidence on and off the road. It will come standard with the newest i-Active all-wheel drive (AWD) technology and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select or Mi-Drive to upgrade the driving experience. The new drive modes, which can be set via the Mi-Drive switch, will assist the crossover SUV in driving naturally in a wide variety conditions, such as in exhilarating off-road terrain or providing dependable towing capabilities. The CX-50 will be available with Skyactiv-G 2.5 naturally aspirated engine or Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine, both combined with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission. The CX-50 will also be available with electric powertrains in the next years, including a traditional hybrid variant. More details about the electric variants will be released at a later date.

The CX-50 introduces a new aesthetic expression in the Mazda lineup, combining the brand’s signature Kodo design with an outdoor-ready demeanor that respectfully interacts with its surroundings. The vehicle’s dynamic proportions are highlighted by the sleek, long silhouette and broad stance, which balance design elements that are geared toward outdoor ruggedness. The interior of the CX-50 is well-crafted, as one would expect from any current Mazda, and boasts a layout that is centered on the driver. The seating materials and details drew inspiration from technical, modern outdoor gear. These contribute to a welcoming ambience for both adventurers and those just getting started on their active lifestyle journey. The occupants will also feel more connected to the nature, thanks to a new panoramic moonroof, which is a first for Mazda. The CX-50 will also be available in new colors, such as Zircon Sand exterior paint and terracotta interior paint.

CX50’s designs are not only stunning, but also functional. While the cabin offers premium comfort to all occupants, the luggage space has been meticulously constructed to complement and support outdoor activities. The height and length of the vehicle are perfect for loading and securing common outdoor equipment. Furthermore, the CX-50’s high-strength roof rails, reinforced B-pillars, and door jams make it easier to secure equipment on the roof. Every CX-50 owner will surely be encouraged to get outside and explore without compromising distinctive designs or dynamic driving.
