Nissan to further sustainability goals with expanded use of ‘green steel’ in Japan
Carmaker aims to use CO2 emissions by 30% in 2030, become carbon neutral in 2050

In the Philippines, Nissan’s sustainable lineup consists of the Leaf and Kicks e-Power.Per the carmaker, the proportion of green steel to be used in the manufacturing of its products is expected to increase by a factor of five this year compared to 2023, when it started using green steel for the first time.

By stepping up its efforts towards decarbonization in the entire process spanning from material procurement, Nissan aims to reach the aforementioned sustainability goals.
“Nissan positions sustainability at the core of its business, aiming for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world,” the company said in a press release.
“Nissan is committed to accelerating its efforts towards realizing a sustainable society in every aspect of business,” it added.
Impacts of using green steel
According to Nissan, the use of steel accounts for approximately 60 percent of a vehicle’s weight. On that note, the use of green steel can significantly reduce CO2 emissions throughout a vehicle’s life cycle.
The carmaker pointed out that a significant portion of CO2 emissions come from the process of reducing iron ore in blast furnaces.
“With green steel, the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by using raw materials from iron ore to low-carbon-reduced iron, or by switching from blast furnace to electric arc furnace,” it explained.
Nissan’s sustainable efforts in PH
In the Philippines, Nissan is one of the first major brands to take sustainable strides by introducing the Leaf electric sedan back in 2021.
Photo by Ruben Manahan IVThe following year, it launched the Kicks e-Power — a hybrid crossover that utilizes an electric vehicle-first approach by using a fully electric motor paired with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine, which acts as its generator.
During last year’s Manila International Auto Show, Nissan Philippines previewed the Ariya. It uses the marque’s e-4ORCE AWD (all-wheel drive) powertrain that packs two electric motors and an 87 kilowatt-hour battery.
