No More Manual Transmission for BMW Cars
MANILA: Are the happy days of manual transmission coming to an end? As BMW CEO Frank van Meel gave a clue in a talk with Autocar, that soon enough BMW cars would not have the manual gearboxes. The BMW M division customers prefer the automatic gearbox over the traditional manual one. He further said, "From a technical standpoint, the future doesn't look bright for manual gearboxes. The DCT and auto 'boxes are faster and they have better fuel consumption."
However, this does not mean that good old manual boxes will die out anytime soon because till the time there is demand for such gearboxes, the M division will comply with the requests. "It's difficult to say we'll stick to the manual, but we still have a big fan community for manuals and we are not going to take away something the customer wants to have,” said by Meel.
The manual transmissions have seen a long way in the automotive industry and this has taught a lot of people how a car takes its first step. Automatic transmissions usually boast lesser acceleration and mileage as compared to the manual, but the dual clutch apparatus getting employed in the new cars including BMW M-series, has enough potential to maintain the pace. Manual gearboxes have also been cherished by many and it has been used by people to get most out of their machines. In this concern, BMW may feel a bit of force on head to pull it completely out of the scene.
When asked about an increase in M division engines output, the reply of Meel was "We're at the limit. If you go on adding more horsepower and torque, it'd probably be over the limits." So, this clarifies that the engines are not going to be more powerful but the manual transmissions will be there to pair them, even if the choice of the same does not add up.
