The MG5 EV is a fully electrified station wagon, and it looks good

MANILA: While the MG5 sedan is scoring great reviews locally, HQ in the UK has been busy transforming the model into a cleaner, more versatile, and prettier version of itself. Welcome the all-new MG5 EV.

Only available in the UK (hopefully not for long), the MG5 EV is a fully electric, zero-emission station wagon that’s powered by a 115kW electric motor putting out 154hp that can send the vehicle from zero to 100kph in just over eight seconds.

Its 52.2kWh water-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack is integrated into the chassis for a lower center of gravity. It can be charged from empty to 80% capacity in just 50 minutes and has a range of 344 kilometers in normal, daily use. If used solely for city driving, range extends to 444 kilometers.

The exterior shows a low-roof tourer that sports a character line with a slight curve towards the rear and comes with a lean and low appearance belying its spacious interior.

Inside is an eight-inch color touchscreen that comes with smartphone mirroring capability and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The large boot can handle 464 liters of cargo even with the tonneau cover. Without it, the vehicle can take it as much as 578 liters of load even with the rear seats still in place. If the 60:40 folding rear seats are down, load capacity increases to 1,456 liters.

Other features include regenerative braking, cruise control with speed limiter, an auto-hold electric parking brake, rain-sensing wipers, and push-button starter — all as standard equipment. It also has active and passive safety systems, with front, side and curtain airbags, electronic brake assist, ABS with EBD, twin Isofix points in the rear, a tire-pressure monitoring system, hill start assist and seatbelt warnings for front and rear passengers.

Price in the UK is £24,495 or P1.513 million, but that includes a P185,000 incentive and zero tax from the UK government.
