MANILA: The month of July came and went with its fair share of new model launches, providing car buyers with a slew of new products to choose from based on their budget, style, motoring needs, and overall preference. 

In addition, we also got a peek at upcoming models that will further excite their respective segments.

Local launches 

Hyundai Staria HEV 

Kicking off the local launches for the month of July was the arrival of the Hyundai Staria HEV (hybrid electric vehicle). 

The people mover packs a 1.6-liter turbocharged Euro 5 gasoline engine paired with a hybrid system and a six-speed automatic transmission. 

Pricing starts from P1.999 million. 

Jaecoo J5 EV 

Omoda Philippines’ sister company Jaecoo Philippines, officially rolled out the J5 EV (electric vehicle). 

Power comes from a single permanent magnet synchronous motor. It stickers for P1.399 million. 

Ford Ranger, Everest 

Ford Philippines released limited-edition variants of its popular nameplates, the Ranger and Everest. 

Dubbed the Ford Ranger Sport+ 4x4, it sports blacked-out exterior appointments while still retaining its powertrain features, sporting (no pun intended) a price tag of P1.999 million. On the other hand, the Everest Titanium+ 4x4 with Power Side Steps — as the name suggests — gets power side steps (also retaining the same engine) and retails for P2.64 million. 

Kia Sportage 

Joining the influx of new-energy crossover sport utility vehicles (SUV) is the returning Kia Sportage. 

Now packing a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter Gamma II turbocharged gasoline engine with a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 1.49 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. 

It has a base price of P1.898 million. 

BMW X3 30e xDrive xLine PHEV 

The luxury SUV segment welcomed a new competitor with the silent launch of the BMW X3 30e xDrive xLine PHEV. 

Relying on a gasoline powerplant with an advanced electric drive system, the posh model is priced at P4.498 million. 

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, all-new Hilux 

Toyota Motor Philippines officially unleashed the Land Cruiser FJ and the all-new Hilux this month. 

The former packs a 2.7-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engine with a sticker price of P2.235 million, while the latter gets either a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV four-cylinder Variable Nozzle Turbo diesel engine or a dual-motor electric drivetrain, retailing for P1.772 million. 

Both nameplates were highlighted at the recently held Toyota Legacy Experience at Santa Rosa, Laguna. 

GAC GN6, E8 HEV, GN8 PHEV    

GAC Philippines has released its family of multi-purpose vehicles this July. 

The trifecta of people movers is comprised of the GAC GN6 (a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, P1.198 million), E8 HEV (2.0-liter Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine paired with an electric motor, starts at P1.858 million), and GN8 Executive PHEV (2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, P3.488 million). 

BYD Atto 2, Seal 5 DM-i   

Not to be left out, BYD Cars Philippines has launched the all-new Atto 2 and the updated Seal 5 DM-i, not too long ago. 

The crossover can be had with either a single electric motor or a PHEV system for a suggested retail price ranging from P1.048 million to P1.338 million. Meanwhile, the sedan gets some performance and cosmetic upgrades for a sticker price ranging from P898,000 to P998,000. 

VinFast E-Motorcycles 

VinFast Philippines’ electric motorcycle arm has officially rolled out its initial offerings. These electric two-wheelers range from P62,900 to P73,900. 

Along with the official product launch, the company shared that at the time of writing, it has 21 active dealerships. 

Upcoming models 

The month also gave us a peek at what to expect in the coming months. For one, MG Philippines is keen on joining the growing rear-wheel drive compact EV segment with the S5 EV. It packs a single electric motor on the rear wheel axle and boasts a drag coefficient of 0.28. 

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation will launch the Outlander PHEV next month. The midsize SUV looks to fill in the electrified gap that was once occupied by the Japanese brand.

Finally, Indian electric motorcycle brand Chetak will face VinFast head-on as it is poised to launch the C3505 soon.
