Triumph Scrambler 400 XC
For its powertrain, the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC uses a 398-cubic-centimeter (cc), single-cylinder, double-overhead cam (DOHC) engine linked to a wet, multi-plate clutch and a six-speed gearbox. The said clutch also has a slip-and-assist feature.
At maximum, the aforementioned powertrain can generate up to 39.4 horsepower (hp) and 37.5 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.
Regarding its frame, it uses a tubular-steel hybrid spine fitted with a bolt-on subframe. Ride quality and handling, meanwhile, are provided by a front inverted big piston fork with 43 millimeters (mm) of travel, and a twin-sided, cast-aluminum swingarm unit paired with a gas monoshock with an external reservoir.
For stopping power, the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC uses a 320 mm front and 230 mm rear disc brake. These are combined with Brembo single-piston calipers and an anti-lock braking system equipped with a dedicated mode of off-roading.
Size-wise, the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC is 2,117 mm long, 901 mm in height, and 1,169 mm in height. It also has a wheelbase length of 1,418 mm, a seat height of 835 mm, and a ground clearance of 200 mm. Notably, the model also has a fuel capacity of 13 liters and a wet weight of 186 kilograms.
Added protection for the Scambler 400 XC is afforded by an aluminum sump guard and a front mudguard. Its neo-retro look is completed by a pair of spoked tubeless wheels measuring 19x2.5 inches.
Other noteworthy equipment available on the off-road Triumph model includes adjustable levers and foot controls, an analog speedometer, a USB Type C charging port, an engine immobilizer, LED lighting fixtures, a two-piece rider and pillion seat, and a multi-function LCD display.

Royal Enfield Scram 411
One big rival of the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC is the Royal Enfield Scram 411. The aforementioned is also a scrambler-type ride, sold at a starting price of P299,000.
To note, the Scram 411 is priced much more affordably than its Triumph rival, but it is also within the 400-cc middleweight range. Specifically, it uses a 411-cc, single-cylinder, single-overhead cam (SOHC) engine equipped with a liquid cooling system, an electronic ignition system, and a five-speed constant-mesh transmission with a wet, multi-plate clutch.
At most, this model can deliver 24.3 hp and 32 Nm of torque.
For its frame, the Scram 411 uses a half-duplex split cradle equipped with a 41 mm front telescopic fork and a rear monoshock suspension with linkage. Its brakes, meanwhile, consist of 300 mm front and 240 mm rear discs with a two-piston and single-piston caliper setup, respectively. And yes, the model also has dual-channel anti-lock braking.
Size-wise, the model is 2,160 mm long, 840 mm wide, and 1,165 mm in height. It also has a wheelbase spanning 1,455 mm, a ground clearance of 200 mm, and a seat height of 795 mm. In total, the Royal Enfield Scram 411’s tank can hold up to 15 liters. It also has a dry weight of 185 kg.
Other notable equipment of the Royal Enfield Scram 411 includes 19-inch front wheels, 17-inch rear wheels, a single-piece scrambler seat, an analog speedometer with digital display, and halogen front and rear lighting fixtures.

KTM 390 Adventure
The KTM 390 Adventure is not a scrambler, but its starting price of P338,000 already places it within striking range of the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC. There’s also the fact that it is an off-road-capable ride, just like its Triumph rival.
Powering the 390 Adventure is a 373-cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill that dishes out 44 hp and 39 Nm of torque. The said engine goes together with a six-speed gearbox and a wet multi-disc, anti-hopping clutch.
Supporting the KTM 390 Adventure is a power-coated, steel trellis frame with an aluminum rear subframe. Its suspension components, meanwhile, consist of a 43 mm inverted front fork and a rear emulsion rear shock with adjustable preloading. Both come from WP Apex, a motorcycle suspension manufacturer from Austria.
For stopping power, the 390 Adventure relies on front and rear disc brakes, with four-piston calipers up front and a single-piston caliper at the rear.
Size-wise, the KTM 390 Adventure is 2,238 mm long, 821 mm wide, and 1,490 mm in height. It also has a wheelbase of 1,464 mm, a ground clearance of 232 mm, and a seat height of 825 mm. Additionally, the KTM-made off-road motorcycle comes with a 14-liter fuel tank and a dry weight of 165 kg.
Other features of the KTM 390 Adventure include anti-lock braking, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, a two-part seat, a windshield, LED lighting, and a TFT display.

Honda CL500
Another off-road-capable ride that might be a good alternative to the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC is the Honda CL500. Sure, it has a larger engine and is more of a “soft-roader”, but its starting price of P409,000 places this Honda-made scrambler within range of the Triumph model.
For its engine, the Honda CL500 uses a liquid-cooled, two-cylinder, DOHC 471-cc engine linked to a six-speed gearbox and a multi-plate wet clutch. At maximum, the said powertrain can put out 45 hp and 43.4 Nm of torque.
Holding the bike together is a diamond steel tubular frame. It also has a telescopic 41 mm front fork, a twin-shock 45 mm round pipe rear swingarm with adjustable pre-loads, as well as a front and rear disc brake setup with single calipers for the front and rear.
Size-wise, the Honda CL500 measures 2,174 mm long, 831 mm wide, and 1,134 mm high. It lao has a seat height of 790 mm, a ground clearance of 155 mm, and a fuel tank capacity of 12.2 liters.
Key amenities available to the CL500 include a full LED lighting system, an LCD meter panel display, dual-channel anti-lock braking, and the Honda Ignition Security System. The aforementioned includes an electronic engine immobilizer.

Final thoughts
Overall, the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC stands in a good position against its rivals. Considering its asking price, it has a competitive amount of power and torque. Plus, it is one of the more off-road-capable amongst the models we’ve featured on this list.
There’s also the fact that the Scramber 400 XC is one of the more affordable “old-school-style” off-road bikes in the market right now. It shares this accolade with the Honda CL500, but most scrambler-type options right now fall into a higher market segment and thus command higher price tags.
On this note, those looking to get into big bikes could consider the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC as a good, relatively beginner-friendly entry point. It also helps that it has an attractive classic style, which, of course, is a huge confidence booster for those just beginning to dip their toes into the world of 400 cc and above motorcycles.
