2020 Geely Coolray - First impression

Geely Philippines recently launched its brand new 2020 Coolray. With this B-segment crossover, the Chinese automobile manufacturer has marked its re-entry in the Philippines market and hopes to establish a firm grip. So far, everything seems to be working pretty well. Geely has high expectations from the Coolray. Here is our first impression of the vehicle.

 Geely Coolray Exterior

Geely might be a new name for you, but this company has been in the car-making business for years now and knows a thing or two. Its expertise can be clearly seen in the way the 2020 Coolray looks. Geely has really stunned us with the new design. The Coolray is quite different from its competitors - Chevrolet Trax, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V,  and Hyundai Kona. It has a refreshing design which should work in its favour.

The front end of the Coolray is pretty attractive thanks to its sleek LED headlamps and sporty front bumper. The grille has a unique shape to it, and Geely likes to call it as the ‘expanding cosmos’ front grille. There are a couple of striking lines on the bonnet. At the side of the car, there is a prominent black cladding and subtle character lines running across the doors and reaching the rear end of the car. The raised window line makes the Coolray look bigger than it actually is. We also like the sporty alloy wheels.

Now, coming to the rear of the Coolray, it seems that it is more attractive than the front end. It has a pair of LED tail lamps that feature thin horizontal signature LED tubes. Joining the two lights is a chrome slat that has ‘GEELY’ embossed on it. The curved line just below the tail lamps is also a nice touch. For sportiness, there is a roof-mounted black spoiler and a large bumper with black diffuser and quad exhausts which aren’t faux but real.

 Geely Coolray Interior

The interior of the 2020 Geely Coolray is quite futuristic and modern. There is a good amount of space all around. Sitting in the driver’s seat, you would notice the flat-bottom steering wheel with various mounted controls. Behind it sits a 7-in LCD instrument panel. The dashboard is very well put together and looks uncluttered and neat. There is a large 10.25-in touch screen infotainment system that takes up a lot of space at the centre console. We don’t have full details as of now but we think that it should support connectivity options like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and has in-built navigation.

Geely has also used some premium materials in the interior. There is a distinctive red color treatment in some parts of the cabin of the top-of-the-line model. Some of the other interesting interior features include leather seats, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, various storage spaces, etc.

Geely Coolray Engine

Coming to the technical bit of the 2020 Geely Coolray specs, it comes with a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine which has been tuned to produce 177 PS of max power at 5500 rpm and 255 Nm of peak torque that kicks in at 1500-4000 rpm. These are some healthy figures both for the engine and the car of its size. Geely calls this engine as GPower, and it is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which would provide seamless gearshifts and great performance. Geely claims that the Coolray can do 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The 2020 Geely Coolray price starts at Php 1.198 million and is an introductory price. For that amount, it seems to be a pretty good package. It has three variants - Comfort, Premium, and Sport - and Geely is providing a 5-year/150,000 km warranty on all of them. The bookings are now open. Our main concern is the after-sales services whose responsibility is given to Sojitz G Auto Philippines, Geely Philippines official distributor in the country. Regarding full specs, we are still waiting for the company to reveal them. As for the colors, there would be two shades - red and white.
