All-new Mitsubishi Strada to be unveiled this year
MANILA: Bet, you didn’t hear about this offing? After what seems like ages, Mitsubishi Motors has finally woken up from its long slumber and is teasing the world with the updated Strada. The all-new Mitsubishi Strada is rumoured to be showcased at an upcoming Philippines Motor Show. While much details aren’t available on this one, it is likely that the unveil of new Strada could be as early as next month. The 6th generation Mitsubishi Strada is said to be designed ground up.
The previous generation Mitsubishi Strada was based on the indomitable Pajero platform. However, little was done to update it. Especially after the Pajero received an overhaul. The new Mitsubishi Strada is likely to be based on the new Xpander platform. There will be significant developments to this platform including the load carrying capability. The Strada is one of the world’s first pickup trucks and a hallowed nameplate. It makes sense for Mitsubishi Motors to launch it in our pickup crazy market. As it is, Mitsubishi has been absent (in terms of a new product) from this segment for quite some time.
If you take a look at the older Strada, it measured 5,280 x 1,785 x 1,780 mm in length, width, and height respectively. The wheelbase is 3,000 mm, making it one of the most spacious in its class. The ground clearance is 205 mm whereas the kerb weight was around 1,800 kg.
In terms of engine, the Mitsubishi Strada specifications confirm the use of two motors. While both were turbocharged diesel units, the state of tune as well as the turbo boost geometry differs. The 2.5-liter 4 In-Line DOHC 16-Valve Euro 4 engine produces 136 PS and 324 Nm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and can be availed only in 2WD guise. A smaller 4 cylinders DOHC 16 valves 2.4-litre Clean Diesel (4N15) with VGT and MIVEC technology is also available. This one is good for 181 PS of power and 430 Nm. One can option this engine with 8-speed, 6-speed manuals, as well as, a 5-speed automatic. There is also a lower powered variant of this engine available in 178 PS/ 400 Nm guise and with 4WD. A 6-speed manual sends power to the rear wheels.
In lieu of all this, Mitsubishi will make the next-generation Strada bigger, more spacious, as well as, add more creature comforts. After all, ever since the last Strada came out, there have been massive strides in the pickup segment. As for those waiting with bated breaths, this Japanese pick up could be coming soon to a Mitsubishi store near you.
