BMW M Awardee in MotoGP to receive M5 prize car

MANILA: The organizers of the 2024 Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP), together with the BMW Group, will be giving away an example of the next-gen M5 along with the BMW M Award. 

For those unaware, it has been a tradition for the Munich-based car brand to provide a prize car together with the BMW M Award.

The aforementioned accolade is given to a MotoGP rider who has emerged on top of a specific point system for the competition’s qualifying rounds. To note, the said point system is separate from the main point tally for the motorcycle racing series’ World Riders’ Championship. 

Last year, the prize vehicle was a BMW XM Label Red. Fast forward to the present, and the German marque has decided to give away an example of its all-new high-performance hybrid sedan. 

“The all-new BMW M5, following the BMW XM Label Red from the 2023 season, is the second BMW M Award winner’s car with an electrified drive system. It represents BMW M’s enthusiasm for future technologies,” BMW Marketing Manager for MotoGP Alex Mittler said. 

“The new BMW M5 is the current flagship of our model lineup and only had its world premiere a few weeks ago. We are very excited to present this brand-new high-performance model as the winner’s car in the BMW M Award even before its market launch. It’s going to be an exciting race for this award, and we wish all the MotoGP riders the best of luck,” Mittler added. 

With regards to the seventh-generation M5, the German marque has already started its production run at its Dingolfing plant in Southern Bavaria, Germany. 

A notable mechanical feature of the M5 model includes the “M Hybrid” powertrain, which is comprised of a twin-turbo V8 engine, an electric motor, and a high-voltage battery. Together, the said system can output up to 727 horsepower. It also has an electric-only drive mode, which can cover up to 69 kilometers.
