Ford favors EREVs, hybrids, smaller all-electric models over big EVs
New strategy also involves an upcoming US-based energy storage business
MANILA: As a way of addressing customer demand, Ford will move away from large electric vehicle (EV) models in favor of more flexible, smaller all-electric platforms, internal combustion models, range-extended vehicles, and hybrids.

To implement this, the Blue Oval plans to create an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of the F-150 Lightning. The aforementioned will be implemented in the model’s next-generation version, which will be produced at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan.

Additionally, Ford will drop its planned all-electric van for the European market. Instead, it plans to develop an upcoming hybrid and gasoline-only commercial van model for North America.
Next up is a yet-to-be-named midsize pickup truck that will be built at the Louisville Assembly Plant. The aforementioned will use Ford’s Universal EV Platform and is touted to be a highly affordable vehicle once it is launched.

In fact, it likewise disclosed its plans to invest around $2 billion (around P118 billion) in a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) business, which the brand says will be instrumental in repurposing its existing US-based battery manufacturing facilities in Kentucky.
The end result of Ford’s new strategy will be seen in 2030. By the said year, the brand estimates that 50 percent of its global sales will consist of hybrids, extended range vehicles, and EV models.
