Google to Partner with Ford Motor in building self-driving cars

MANILA: As Google is developing the future self-driving autonomous cars, it also needs some technology partner in order to execute the required prototype in the real world. Ford Motor Co. is a leading American multinational automobile manufacturer and aims to develop more efficient cars for the future. Google and Ford have held many talks since 2011 in order to team up for manufacturing self-driving cars and share few important technology for the car that would make it safe for roads. Both multinational giants are planning to join a venture in order to build the autonomous car.

Looking forward to make the car successful, the companies could announce the official details regarding the partnership by early January, 2016. Ford is working on the technology that enables drivers to learn driving habits and travel to their destination in a better way. Ford has already started the testing of its self-driving cars on public roads since last week after getting California autonomous vehicle driving permit. It’s the 10-year long project, Ford has been working in the area of Smart Mobility program.

With the success of the Smart Mobility program, Ford is looking forward to work on 13 more projects that would open more possibilities in making mobility easy and efficient. It is also setting up its research centre in Stanford by 2016. Meanwhile, Google has started testing its self-driving cars since May 2015 on the public roads of California. The Google-Ford deal will open up the program and the technology sharing will lead to sustainable industrial growth as well.

However, the company executives haven’t revealed whether Ford will supply sensors or design layout for Google cars, but the company is expecting to launch complete autonomous cars in the span of four years. Ford has also announced the testing of Fusion hybrids to be done in 2016. Therefore, the partnership will benefit the Silicon Valley by saving various extra development costs. Ford can utilize the production-ready engine and other components for the development of the autonomous cars.
