Hyundai Elantra - Buyer’s guide

Hyundai Elantra is a familiar name for the Filipinos because this mid-size sedan has been around in the country for quite some time now. And even today, with new cars getting launched so frequently, the Elantra continues to be on sale.

If you are looking to buy a new mid-size sedan, you would likely have come across the Hyundai Elantra. So, this article should prove very helpful to you as we’re going to give you a complete buyer’s guide.

Hyundai Elantra variants-

Hyundai Elantra is available two variants - 1.6 GL 6 MT and 1.6 GL 6 AT. It’s quite clear by their names that both of them are very similar to each other with a major difference being in their transmission.

Hyundai Elantra engine specifications-

Since we’ve started with the variants, we would like to discuss the Hyundai Elantra engine specs first. It’s a 1.6-litre engine which churns out 127.5 PS of max power at 6,300 rpm and 153 Nm of peak torque at 4,850 rpm.

Both the Elantra variants are powered by this engine. Like we mentioned earlier, the major difference between them is the transmission. This engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

Hyundai Elantra exterior features-

The Elantra is indeed a beautiful car and all the credit goes to Hyundai’s Fluidic design philosophy. Apart from giving the car an attractive look, this design language is also quite aerodynamic which, in turn, enhances both performance and fuel efficiency.

The front end of the Elantra sports a pair of projector-type headlamps. Then there’s Hyundai’s signature grille. The front bumper is pretty sporty to look at, too. The side profile of the car is maintained by the smooth roofline and stylish alloy wheels.

One of our favourite Elantra exterior features is the rear combination tail lamps. They are quite large in size but suit the car perfectly. Also, they add that extra oomph factor.

Hyundai Elantra interior features-

Elantra’s cabin is a good place to be in as long as you don’t have too many people invited. It means that the amount of space and comfort would be the best for four people. Although Hyundai did provide an extra rear AC vent for the comfort of the rear passengers.

When it comes to infotainment, the Elantra would not be able to match up to its competition. All it gets is a 5-inch monitor with FM/AM Radio, CD, USB, and AUX connectivity. There’s not even Bluetooth connectivity!

What’s good about the Elantra’s interior?

Ans. Well, we would say the dashboard layout. Hyundai has designed it ergonomically. All the buttons and switches are just at the right places and the driver would not have to reach out to access them. We also think that the 3-spoke steering wheel is quite sporty.

How are things in the safety department?

Ans. This is something that we really take very seriously and the Elantra has disappointed us. Go through the Hyundai Elantra specs sheet in detail and you would come to know that there are hardly any good safety features.

For a price of Php 970,000, the only thing worth mentioning is a driver-side SRS airbag. And if you want a couple of those, then you have to pay Php 1.06 million! This is really a shame because even the less priced Toyota Vios has seven SRS airbags that come as standard across all its variants.

Today, the Elantra is still up for sale and perhaps the only reason people are buying it is its design and maybe its engine. There are much better options like Honda City, and Toyota Vios, available in the market that are better looking, more feature-equipped, and more bang for the buck.
