Kia PH boosts support to pole vault star Obiena

MANILA: Kia Philippines furthered its support to Filipino Olympian Ernest John (EJ) Obiena as he continues to represent the country on the global stage.

The ACMobility subsidiary shared in statement that the initiative with the pole vault star is in line with the Korean marque’s global philosophy “Movement That Inspires” and complements the Ayala Group’s broader advocacy for athlete development through programs such as Atletang Ayala.

“EJ’s story mirrors Kia’s own evolution, driven by discipline, innovation, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence,” Kia Philippines Managing Director Jay Lopez said.

“He’s a living embodiment of movement that inspires, and we’re proud to help him reach even greater heights,” he added.

According to Kia Philippines, Obiena continues to use dedicated mobility support from them as he competes and trains around the world.

To recall, the athlete — along with others who took part in the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge (where Kia served as the official mobility partner) — was transported by Kia vehicles throughout the duration of his visit.

Held last September 20-21 at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati, top international pole vaulters used the following models:

• EV9
• Carnival
• Seltos

The Ayala-led automotive distributor also mentioned that a Kia Sorento Turbo Hybrid was also provided to be his personal vehicle for other engagements across the country.

In Italy where Obiena resides and trains, Kia has extended its support through its global network by providing him with a dedicated vehicle for his daily mobility needs.

“I’ve mostly driven Kias my whole life, from my first car to the Sorento I used while I was in the Philippines,” Obiena noted. “It’s kind of poetic that the brand I started with is now a partner in my journey. Kia has always been purposeful, capable, and stylish, just like how I approach my sport.”

Aside from Obiena, the Ayala Group supports other athletes through initiatives that strengthen preparation, build capabilities, and support long-term growth like the Ayala Foundation’s Atletang Ayala.

Under this initiative, the group provides national athletes with full-salaried employment, flexible work arrangements, and access to world-class training and medical facilities — allowing them to help them excel both in sport and in their professional careers.

National shooting athlete and Atletang Ayala member Amparo Acuña, who is also participating in this year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, shared how Kia and Ayala’s programs have shaped her journey:

“I’ve always appreciated how reliable and spacious Kia vehicles are, especially when I'm carrying my gear,” shared Acuña, national shooting athlete and member of Atletang Ayala. “I used to drive an older Kia, and it was perfect for my needs. It made every trip to training and competitions so much easier. It's inspiring to see Ayala supporting athletes like us while continuing to champion the spirit of purpose and performance,” she explained.

Further, Kia celebrates those under the Atletang Ayala program who are joining the international multi-sport event by featuring them in a series of short-form videos to inspire greatness.

“This partnership goes beyond providing vehicles,” Lopez said. “It’s about supporting Filipino excellence in all forms, on the road, in sport, and in life. We want Kia to be a brand that moves people to achieve more and reach higher.”
